the next morning, giovanna woke to find herself on the couch. her back and neck hurt like hell, and every time she moved she felt like dying. after sitting herself up and rubbing her eyes to try and force herself awake, she turned on the television. nothing. "ugh," she groaned, forcing herself to stand as she realized the power was out. she pulled her phone out of her pocket. 9:54. "mum! dad!" she called out. her parents had shown up the night before, so she knew they were here. yet, she received no reply. "well, guess this is the day i die."

just as she said this, callum slides down the rail of the stairs, video camera in his hand and a large smile on his face. "whoo!" he shouted, laughing. he caught giovanna's eye, sending her a sly grin. "and this is my friend, giovanna!" she knew he was lying, but she went with it. he put her in the camera view and she gave a small grin and waved. he turned the camera off and looked at her once more.

"you still gonna be a little bitch?" she pursed her lips and crossed her arms. he was acting like a child who didn't get his way, and to be quite honest, giovanna was never good with children. he rolled his eyes, not bothering to answer her question. "y'know what callum, if i'm gonna have to spend a whole fucking month with you, i don't want to always be in a some stupid ass argument." callum held back a smirk as she took a moment to pause. "let's make a bet. let's both try not to argue for the rest of the month. whoever causes an argument first has to go lie in the snow completely naked for five minutes. deal?" she held out her hand for callum to shake.

"you just really want to see me naked, don't you?" callum asked, chuckling. she rolled her eyes as callum finally went to shake her hand. "deal." giovanna turned to jump on the couch.

"where the hell did my parents go?" she asked him, furrowing her eyebrows in frustration. callum continued to just stare at her.

"they went to the town a few miles back to buy candles. it's a snowstorm though, so they probably won't be back for a while," he answered, tilting her head. "you have a mouth on you, don't you?" if callum hadn't been absorbed by blind hatred, he would've noticed how attractive he found giovanna. she was beautiful, funny, and sassy. all of the things he looked for in any girl.

she rolled her eyes,"sometimes." she wouldn't admit it either, but she used to think callum airey was one of the cutest boys she had ever even met. in high school, she would call it her "teenage girl hormones acting crazy", but now, she still thought he was cute.

callum bit his lip, before speaking again. "you want to go down in the basement and explore?"

she looked taken aback. "are you crazy?" she laughed. "the power is out, and you want to explore the dang basement?" he shrugged. "hoe, you're insane."

"oh, c'mon!" cal chuckled, rolling his eyes at the scared girl. "it'll be fun, and we have flashlights. don't be a chicken."

suddenly, her face turned into a competitive frown. "oh, okay then. i'll lead the way. gimme a flashlight." she held out her hand and put a hand on her hips. this was a competition now. no one calls her a chicken. he went to go get the flashlights from the kitchen drawer. then, he handed it to her. she marched to a hallway, but callum wasn't following her. "what are you doing?"

"the basement is over there?" he pointed to a door nowhere near where she was headed. he held back his laughter, watching as she sighed.

"duh. i knew that," she scoffed, walking towards the door and opening it, revealing a set of stairs that led into the dark basement. she gulped. "callum, dear, if i die down there, i hope you die, too. you brought me into this mess." she turned on her flashlight and cautiously moved down the stairs, step by step. she let out a shaky breath as she reached the bottom. "we're here." she moved her flashlight around and sighed in relief.

a loud, high-pitched scream could be heard, causing her her to jump back and point her flashlight in the direction of the sound.

of course, it was callum.

"you hoe!" she groaned. she pushed him slightly, crossing her arms afterwards. "now we're really going to die. thanks for jinxing us." he rolled his eyes playfully, smiling at the frightened girl.

"it's alright," he laughed. "i'll protect you."

maybe it was their competitive nature, maybe it was their obvious compatibility, or maybe it was just them realizing how stupid they acted, but suddenly, they seemed to get along just fine. for now, at least.
