giovanna's eyes stayed on the trail ahead of her. thoughts of horror movies and video games crept to her thoughts, making her paranoid to continue up the narrow, snowy trail. she gulped, listening to the sound of the wind rustle the leaves. she squinted at the sight ahead of her, the lights of the cabin barely visible.
the sound of a stick breaking startled her. she paused, mumbling a quiet prayer, hoping she wouldn't get brutally murdered by some axe-wielding maniac. "please go away," she whispered into the wind. she stepped back, only to be greeted by the feeling of hands on her back.
she screamed loudly, turning around and throwing a blind punch into what felt like the person's nose. "holy shit!" she heard the familiar voice shout angrily. she opened her eyes to see callum stand there, blood running out of his nose. "what the hell, thompson?" he wiped his nose with his shirt, which, considering it wasn't stopping, was ineffective.
she didn't answer, too busy trying to stifle a laugh. her and cal had named gotten along. having parents that were best friends and being forced to spend time together had only made their hatred for one another grow stronger. even at twenty, both disliked each other extremely.
"don't scare me next time, asshole," she crossed her arms, glaring at him. he rolled his eyes, starting to walk up the mountain, so he wouldn't have to deal with her. she followed him up the mountain because even if she hated him, he couldn't sneak up on her and terrify her again. "i didn't know you were coming here."
"yeah, having you up here ruining my whole vacation is such a my dream, babe," he scoffed. "i didn't know you were coming until i already left, so there's really nothing either of us can do now, is there?" giovanna opened her mouth, but she was cut off before she could speak. "when we get to the cabin, we can go our separate ways and not talk to each other. that's the real dream."
she rolled her, walking behind cal and silently mocking his words. "jerkface," she mumbled under her breath. she looked up to see the bright lights and snowy roof of the cabin. a smile grew on her face as she ran to the door. "thank goodness," she knocked on the door a few times before it was finally answered by cal's mum. "mrs. airey!"
"hello, dear!" she smiled,"how are you?" she let both cal and giovanna past her.
"wonderful. thank you for asking," she paused to look around. "where's megan?" her and megan had always gotten along, especially when cal would be mean to both of them as a child.
"she's at home sick, i'm afraid," cal's mum shook her head sadly. "told us to go on without her, sweet girl."
"poor meg," giovanna faked a frown, remembering the days she tried that excuse on her parents. "um, where am i going to sleep?"
his mum smiled at her,"up the stairs, first room to the left. you and cal will be sharing a room."
"mum, no!" cal protested immediately. "i'll sleep on the couch, i'll sleep where meg was going to sleep. please?"
his mum frowned,"callum leighton airey, you will be grateful for what you get and sleep in that room. you're lucky megan was sick or i would've crammed all three of you in there together." her arms were crossed and eyebrows furrowed, glaring up at her son. he didn't say another word, but simply huffed up to the room they would be sharing. she turned to giovanna,"i'm sorry that i'm making you deal with him."
"it's alright," giovanna laughed, but she was screaming inside her mind. she would have to room with the worst person she knew for a whole month. she reluctantly treaded up the stairs, prepared for the worst.
and she was right. callum sat, huffing and puffing, pacing around the room, angrily looking at the floor around to before looking up at giovanna. "look," he groaned," i really don't want to hang out with you or be in this room, but we need rules."
"okay, simple," giovanna rolled her eyes," if you stay on that side of the room and shut your mouth, i promise i won't end up murdering you."
"back at you," cal mumbled under his breath, throwing his bag into the closet by his bed. he sat on the red plaid covers and checked his phone. "no service up here or wifi," he groaned even louder. "great!"
giovanna sighed. of course, she thought, i, of all people, get stuck with this idiot. she hopped onto her bed, plugging up her phone charger by the bedside table. looking up at callum, who was huffing and puffing about this vacation being the worst, she got an idea. "maybe they have board games," she accidentally stated out loud.
"what?" cal snapped, narrowing his eyes and grimacing at her.
"nothing," she shrugged.
he crossed his arms," tell me. i want to know."
she sighed, shaking her head. "you're literally six," she took a deep breath," okay, i was just wondering if there were board games here. y'know, like monopoly–"
"– i'd beat you."
"life–"
"– destroy you."
"or maybe some cards," she finally finished, looking at cal, waiting for another cocky remark. when it didn't come, she smiled. "i'm going to search for some, you can stay here and be a whiny child if you'd like." in the corner of her eye, she saw him roll his eyes.
"i'm coming with you. might as well do something, even if it's with you," he sighed, standing up and following her out the door to check in the closets and drawers of the cabin.
she rolled her eyes. he really was going to make this way more painful than it had to be. "fine. you can check the top shelves, you fucking giant."
