I looked at Sarah and was about to speak when she stepped over the threshold and cleared her throat loudly. I stepped around the corner and my heart stopped. There was that little girl, lying on the ground half dressed with Matt lying on top of her. When Sarah cleared her throat the girl turned so we could see her face. She had a long cut running across the left side of her forehead, just above her eyebrow. Blood was running down her face, mixing with the tears that were streaming down her cheeks. Her chin was swelling black and blue. There were handprint shaped bruises on her arms and her shoulder hadn't stopped bleeding. She was so pale I was surprised her eyes were still open; then again, it would probably be easier if they weren’t.

“I’m ready to talk,” Sarah said meekly. I squeezed her hand for support. “Just please, get off of Felicity.”

He stood up, wiping the blood off his chest and throwing Felicity’s shirt at her roughly. Wincing as it hit her cut forehead; she tried to sit up but crumpled back into the floor, distress clear across her face. I stepped forward to help her up, but Sarah tightened the grip on my hand, refusing to let me go. I looked at her apologetically and she allowed me to pull my hand free of her suffocating grasp. I bent down, reaching a hand behind Felicity’s back. She flinched away, breaking eye contact fearfully.

“It’s okay, I don’t want to hurt you,” I whispered. She arched her back in acknowledgement, allowing me to slip my arm behind her and pull her up to an awkward half sitting position.

I helped slip the faded grey shirt back over her head smoothly. She could only move one arm so she needed a lot of help. Almost immediately blood started to soak into the fabric covering her stomach, like a flower blossoming in the spring.

Just as I started to register the metallic scent of blood in the air, Matt spoke. “So now you want to talk, after all of this. Couldn’t you just talk to me when I came downstairs sweetheart?” He asked sounding eerily solemn and quiet, like the calm before the storm.

Nodding her head, she opened her mouth but didn't have time to speak. Matt was on her in an instant, grabbing her by the hair and throwing her into the wall. Roughly pressing his body against her back he growled in her ear, “You won’t get away with that again.”

“I know, I won’t do it again, I promise.” She whimpered back.

“I know you won’t.”He threw her to the ground and then turned, pulling out his shiny hand gun and smoothly attaching a silencer. “Now, you are going to tell me what I want to know or I swear to God I will kill you.”

“No you won’t, because if you kill me you’ll have no way to find out what you want to know,” She responded with a sour smirk.

“What about her?” He motioned towards Felicity with his gun hand, making her flinch.

“As if I’d tell her anything, she’s just a useless kid.”

“Useless kid?” Felicity butt in, “but-but you’re only thirteen, you’re younger than me. How could you say that?”

Sarah threw her head back. “Ha, thirteen. You honestly thought I was telling the truth. God, you’re even dumber than you look, aren’t you? I’m nineteen; I just haven’t aged physically since I was fourteen. That’s when I started getting sick.” She said with a sneer and turned back to Matt, “So go ahead; kill me. I’m going to die anyways.” Holding her head high, she stared Matt directly in the eye, something I’d always been too scared to do and for the first time since she’d been brought here, I felt the slightest pang of admiration, but what happened next was enough to drown any flame that had lit within me.
