Digging her hunting knife into the bark of the tree, tyler stood on her toes to get the leverage she needed. "you sure he's gonna see that?" Zach asked. "or that he's even out here?"

Sheathing her knife she stepped back and wiped off the saw dust. "oh he'll see it. And it wouldnt surprise me if Owen has already combed the northern hemisphere of this place. Once the guy gets something into that thick head of his-" the three kept walking. "-there's no getting it out."

"Sounds like someone I know." Zach motioned towards gray.

Tyler just grinned. "hey, it ain't always a bad thing."

"How so?"

Stepping over a log, zach reached and helped both her and gray over as well. Gray had given her a rubber band to cut the blood flow off to her arm. Until they got that glass out, they couldn't put any pressure on it. "My brother would go to the end of this Earth to find me, because thats what he has in his head. Owen wouldn't leave me again."

"When I was younger-" she ducked under a branch and held it for the boys too. "Owen was in the Navy, I didn't exist yet. Then one magical night, I happened!" She chuckled. "I was a mistake, and it was clear all through my childhood." From behind, gray and zach watched her carefully. "on my own alot. Except for when Owen came home. Treated me like an actual human being, we shared a room and everything. I remember he used to take me out for ice cream the first night he would come home. Always got the same thing, blue moon and chocolate raspberry truffle. I think that's how he got the name blue moon for blue, it's her full name.  He'd buy my clothes, everything I needed to get by until he got back."

Zach stepped beside her. "that's... horrible"

She just chuckled. "oh please. You haven't heard the worst of it. "when I turned 12, my parents disowned me and tossed me out on the streets. No house, no food, no Owen. I got one backpack and 10 minutes to pack before they told me they were taking me on a trip. Next thing I know they left me on the side of nowhere in the rain. Waved goodbye in the rear view mirror as I watched their tail lights sail away."

"They left you?" Gray trampled forward to her side.

"Yup." She didn't seem bothered by it. "walked for three days before I found someone with a phone who would let a dirty little kid use it. So, I called the only number I knew, Owen's. He didnt pick up though, I didn't expect him too. He was overseas somewhere in the middle of a desert, so, his general took a message. I just told him that he needed to come home as soon as possible and to look for me in the alley of the ice cream shop. And thats where I waited."

"How long?"

Taking a breath, she ducked underneath another branch. "about eight months. No phone, no address to get letters. I just had to pray he would get the message. Then one day, he showed up and took me away. Been with him ever since."

There was a short silence. Zach shook his head. "tyler, thats-"

"It's me zach." She cut him off. "it's what made me, me. And I wouldn't change one second of it."

Planting her boot on the first cement step, both her and zach guarded Gray as they stared down the large worn down building. The wood was rotted, concrete cracked, and glass shattered.

"Stay here." Zach warned his little brother as the two stepped forward. However, the kid had nothing to do with it. He raced forward wrapping his arms around Tyler's waist hugging her backside close. Meanwhile, zach kept his hand on Gray's shoulder making sure his front and back were covered.
