It Didn't Surprise Him

Zach leaned on his knees staring at her. Ever since he got here, the boy refused to leave, sleep, eat anything. Not until she woke up, not until she was able to talk to him. Of course she didn't know that he was there earlier, she couldn't see him. He also wasn't the most social guy.

As hard as he tried, Zach wasn't able to get rid of the image of her seizing. It was something that eh would remember until the day that he died. Ty was always the kind of girl that was in control of things, so seeing her not be able to, it scarred him.

Owen was asleep on the far bench, he shared the same mind set that Zach did. The others had gone off, some sleeping in a hotel and some sleeping in the waiting room. his parents were a little hesitant on letting him stay, but even Grey reassured them that Tyler would want her there. Somewhat awkwardly, Owen had to agree. There was nothing that she could recall from the island, so knowing that Zach was okay seemed to be something that made sense to them. They needed her as relaxed as they could possibly get her.

Especially if she was going to be going in for surgery soon.

They said that it was from swelling, the swelling in her brain pressing up against her temporal lobe. they needed to relieve it, otherwise there was no telling just what it could do. One day she could wake up and not be able to hear, drink, or eat anything. the mind was a tricky thing to be playing with.

It was nearing around three in the morning, and sleep wasn't something that was coming to him at the moment. every time that he closed his eyes he just saw her, bloody, in pain, lifeless... So, he preferred to stay awake in a more relaxed setting. At least here she wasn't covered in dirt and blood, she wasn't in any more danger than what they knew of. At least here hey could get her the help that she needed.

He would do anything for her to wake up though, anything to let her know that he was here with her. She needed to sleep though, the doctors had made that clear. They were hoping that somehow, by a miracle, there would be a natural chapter where her mind would lessen the swelling by itself. the chance of that happening though was slim to none.

Reality needed to be taken into account here.

Zach recalled the first time that he met her. The guy was miserable, looking for a way out of the stupid vacation that his brother and aunt had dragged him into. The family was barely a family at that point in time, but looking at it now, they were closer than they had ever been before.

Tyler was beautiful, her blonde hair nearly swaying as she walked towards them. The entire crowd of people didn't matter to him, all he could focus on was the life, the piercing blue eyes, and the glowing blonde hair that was moving in his direction.

Right here though, right now, a dull grey took over everything. Some ends of her hair were burnt off, others remained long and untouched. She was a site for soar eyes, but at least she was alive.

Thanks to her, he was too.

Not really knowing what else to do- Zach reached forward and intertwined his fingers with her. Some were covered with wires, but it didn't matter to him. He just wanted to touch her, Zach just wanted to make sure that she was truly alive. She had protected him and his brother throughout the entire trip, now it was his turn to make sure that he could do the same for her.

It was cold, her skin- just like it was the day that they lost her.

Turning her hand over though, he couldn't help but smile. It was a shitty thing to smile about, but it was a scar that would always remind him of the days they had together. On her wrist, it was bandaged tight, the full extent of the glass now retracted sitting on the operating table in the other room.

She was a fighter, Ty couldn't quit now. He wouldn't let her.

So, that's why it didn't surprise him. It didn't surprise him when she pulled him from his shell, it didn't surprise him when she managed to encourage himself and his brother to jump off a cliff, it didn't surprise him her best friend was a reptile, it didn't surprise him she knew how to hot wire a jeep, and it didn't surprise him that she was willing to give her life for the people around her. Most of all though, it didn't surprise him when she showed him a sign of life. It didn't surprise Zach Mitchell When Tyler O'grady squeezed back.
