It's been about a week since I last talked to David alone. Let me tell ya, it's been hard. I mean, it's like ya meet someone, ya kiss in the rain, then completely don't talk to them. It's awkward.
But all that changed when I was back at the lodging house, all by myself. All the boys went out to go drinking one night and it ain't proper for a "girl like me to be in a pub" or whatever. So I was home, just passing the time when a knock comes to the door.
I stood up to go and answer it. Deciding to throw on one of my brother's oversized shirts so the mysterious person at the door isn't just staring at me in my pajamas, I answered the door.
It was Davey.
"Uhh, Reagan."
"Hello, Davey, what's been up?"
"Oh, nothin much. Do you mind if I come in?"
"Sure, there ain't nobody here except me."
I let Davey in and as I shut the door, I saw him rub the back of his neck slowly. I remember feeling his nervous energy bout something.
"So, whatcha need Davey?"
"Well, I have a question for you."
"Alright."
"Well, my sister just got engaged last Sunday-"
"Oh Davey that's amazing!" I answered him. Thank GOD. That little snippy girl doesn't like me and never will, so with her out of the house and married, it'll be easier to come see David, whenever that's gonna happen.
"Heh, thank you. But she is getting married in a month."
"A month?! Why so soon?!"
"She's marrying some sort of foreign spy that has to go overseas in a month and a half and she wants to marry him before he leaves so she can join him."
"Oh, I see"
"Anyway, she's having this very fancy wedding with everyone being all gracious and coordinated. My parents and her fiancé's parents wanted to do a family dance where each of the family members bring someone onto the dance floor for one song to dance to."
"Aww Davey that sounds like a lots of fun."
"But I can't dance!" He shouts really fast.
"What did you just say?" I asked.
"I, I can't dance." He admitted slowly. "And I need someone to help me learn so I don't look like an idiot at the dance."
"Davey, so you just wanted me to teach ya how to dance?"
"Yes, Reagan, I do."
"Ha, well of course I will." I answered. "Why don't we start now?"
"Now?!"
"Yes now," I said hitting him playfully in the shoulder. "Come on."
We both got up from where we had settled on the bunks and I started to coach him in the middle of the lodging house.
"Now you just gotta go forward side close, see like this," I said while leading him as if he was a girl.
"Back side together. Forward side close." Davey said, muttering to himself.
As Davey concentrated and looked at his feet, I looked up at him. His eyebrows were furrowed and his brown curly hair had a mind of its own. His beautifully cut jawline was set with the little stubbles of facial hair that started to peak out through his skin. And his eyes never lost focus of his feet. It's like they sent icy lasers to his feet to make them work. And his hands were tightly gripped on my waist and in my other hand, probably because he was so concentrated on not messing up.
I smiled and then squeezed his left hand with my right hand. That made him stop dancing and look up at me. A tiny smile and laugh escaped his mouth- I knew he felt embarrassed when he looked away. I took his head in my hands and turned it so we had eye contact. I felt electricity moving through my hands at the touch of feeling his bare face.
It was silent, for what seemed like eternity. Then I felt his breath getting closer and closer to me as we closed the gap in between us. His lips were soft and gentle on top of mine. The sensation of the fantastic kisses I had on the fire escape soon returned and I was on Cloud 9.
I wrapped my arms around his neck as his hands went to hold nape of my neck my. Every kiss felt even more fulfilling, something I had missed this past week. I finally let go, wheezing out the word "Air!"
We both caught out breath before he smiled only inches away from me.
"How come we didn't talk?" I whispered to him.
"I was afraid it was all unreal, like it didn't happen. Like it was all just a-"
"Fantasy?" I finished for him.
"Yes," he smiled, "a fantasy. But now I know it wasn't," as he took my lips and placed them where they belonged. And at that moment, it was right on his.
He rubbed my back in comforting circles with his hands. Everytime his hands met in the middle of my back, I felt an ice cold shiver run up my back and out my arms.
Then there was a click and a bang of the door as all the newsboys filed into the lodging house.
Davey and I immediately snapped back and let go of each other. We both watched the newsies climbing into their beds, some stumbling around for a while before collapsing on the floor. I then saw my brother Jack come tumbling in after everyone.
"Davey, my pal, what are you doing here," he said in a carefree, kinda drunk tone, "with my sister Ra-" he stopped and turned back into normal overly-stern Jack. "What are you doing here alone with my sister Ray?" He said with anger biting at his every word.
"Haha, aww Jack, I bet they made love and just finished up. I mean, look at him. He's so pale, I woulda thunk he just saw a ghost." drunk Race proceeded to cackle. Drunk Boots and Specs proceeded to back him up with a bunch of whooping OHHS!!
I saw Davey blush a deep red as my brother turned to me, with pure hatred flooding his face. I saw his fists clench and his foot start to tap.
"I'm- she's well- I," David started to stutter.
"He needed my help with learning how to dance for his sister's wedding," I chimed in. "Ain't that the truth Davey?"
"Ab-Absolutely," Davey managed to get out without looking my brother in the eyes. I felt badly for him, totally just getting put under the bus. I mean, having the new newsboy comin and making love to the long time leader of the newsboys' younger sister? It sounds pretty bad like that.
"Jack, I'se promise we'se telling the truth. I wouldn't lie to ya'se. I'm fine."
Jack relaxed and took a deep breath out. I felt Davey relax to. He wasn't in such a state of sudden spotlight and felt more comfortable. He even managed to smirk at me.
"Fine, that's fine." Jack finally said. "Now go git him outta ere."
I led Davey to the door and as I opened, a whisper came out.
"I'm really sorry bout that, Jack, when he gets all drunk, he got some crazy ideas in his head." I managed to say to David.
"That's alright. No big deal. Do you mind coming over to my apartment tomorrow tell help me learn some more?"
"Of course I'll give ya some teachin. Just don't cha tell Jack." He managed to breathily laugh out at my comment.
David smiled his amazing beautiful smile before turning around and walking off into the distance of the dark streets. But as I shut the door, the only thing in the world I wanted to do was rip the door open and go running after him in the darkness.
