Dance with Me Tonight

"Mia?" Alex asked on the bus ride home from the annual overnight camping trip. We were all soaking wet and glad to be heading home. The camping trip was miserable, really.

"What's up, Alex?" I answered

"...Will you...go...to the dance...with me?" Alex stammered.

I've never been asked out before, so this was totally new. If this was my previous crush, who turned out to be a total jerk, asking me, I would've rejected him. That was SO last year. Was Alex interested in having a relationship with me? If you ask me, 14 is WAY too early to be dating. Besides, I wasn't interested in having a love life. I heard about the drama at Amy's school. Eighth graders get knocked up, apparently. Yikes, I don't want any of that in my school.

"Okay, Alex..."

"Yay!"

"But no lovey-dovey. Or hanky-panky." I responded. Seriously, the rate of teen pregnancy is TOO DAMN HIGH!

Soon, everybody jumped in on the bandwagon. By the end of the trip, about 12 couples were headed to the dance.

"Alex asked me out to the dance, mom!" I said as mom drove me home.

"Really?"

"Yeah! We're just gonna dance the night away...literally."

"That's totally awesome, Mia!"

"Thanks, mom."

THREE WEEKS LATER

The Halloween dance rolled around sooner than I had thought. When I got home, I immediately started preparing for the dance. My cousin Kim came around at 6:00, put on my make up, and did my hair. I was going as Hilda from Pokemon Black and White.

An hour later, Kim was finished with me. I looked into the mirror and smiled. My hair was really curly at the bottom, and I totally felt like a goddess.

So Ethan proceeded to drive me to the dance. I got out of the car and saw, Joe, a seventh grader. He was dressed like Elvis Presley.

"Nice costume, Joe!" I commented.

"You too, Mia! Who are you supposed to be?"

"A Pokemon trainer!"

I just happened to be really early that time. Aside from Joe and me, there was one other guy, a sixth grader named Randy. His dirty blonde curls are recognizable from any distance.

Soon, the rest of the gang flocked in. Alex wasn't in costume; he was wearing some sports clothes. I could've sworn he went as an athlete. Around 8:00, the party took off. Everybody was dancing on the dance floor.

Just then, a popular dance song came on. I walked up to Alex and said, "Let's have a dance-off."

"Sure." Alex said. The whole scene was a complete blur. All I remembered was the dance-off ending in a draw.

Alex had totally changed from last year. He wasn't such a complete burden...well, he still is to a few teachers. Last year, he kept asking me if I could go with him to McDonald's. Seriously, if he really goes to McDonald's as much as he asked me to go with him, he'd be needing a diet. Plus, the food there is unhealthy. But that was SO last year. Since then, he's grown up a bit. He wasn't as chubby as he was last year, and he was as tall as me. Must've been puberty. Guess some people can grow out of their annoying habits.

And just like that, the dance ended. It was really fun, but nothing much happened, unless you count Katie, a seventh grader, receiving flowers from Joe and getting a hug. Alex and I never ended up in a relationship, which was okay with us. We just wanted to be friends, and Alex didn't seem to mind being friend-zoned by me.
