Not A Silent Night
"You can't give that to Gemma" I sob, angered by the unfairness of it all "You can't keep putting things between Gemma and I that'll only make me resent her"
"Dad gave it to me" Chris says, his voice quiet. "When he first found out that Gemma was pregnant. He said even though it's not a necessity in the modern era, when you're happy, it's more of a lasting agreement of happiness"
"But it's Mum's ring Chris. It's the ring that Dad gave her" I whimper "You can't give it to Gemma. By all means, propose to her but not with Mum's ring, please"
"Why not? That's what Dad gave it to me for! That's what he wanted me to do with it" Chris argues back and it's hard to dispute his logic, which makes me even more frustrated.
But at the same time, that's my Mum's ring. Chris wasn't the only one to lose her, I did too. And for Dad just to give the ring to Chris without even asking me...
"That's the only story I have of her, Chris. You have memories of her. You remember her face. You have pictures with her at the beach, in the garden. I don't have any of that. I have that one precious story I remember her telling me of the night Daddy proposed. And she showed me the ring. That's all I have of her. That's all I remember" I explain, trying to keep my voice steady but there's a lump in my throat I can't ignore.
"The ring should be hers, Chris" A voice says from behind me, and both Chris and I spin around to find Gemma staring at us, leaning against the doorframe.
"No it shouldn't, that's giving Chelsea her own way again. She's spoiled enough" Chris snarls and Gemma rolls her eyes.
"I swear Chris, you're the most spoiled person I've ever met. You want everything your own way and you hate when you don't get it" Gemma comments, raising her eyebrows.
"No I'm not" Chris pouts immaturely and Gemma gives a wry smile.
"Yes, you are. But I love you anyways. My Mum gave my sister her old Christian Louboutin shoes and I didn't speak to either of them for six months" Gemma recalls and I raise my eyebrows. I didn't know she had a sister. "So I can't imagine how I would feel if my Mum's engagement ring was given to someone I'd only just started getting on with"
"No" I say, wiping away my tears. Gemma's defence of me made me realise that Dad did give the ring to Chris for a reason. Mum would have wanted Gemma to have it. "Gemma should have it. It's what Daddy and Mum would have wanted"
"Maybe it is what they wanted, but both of you know that just because people want something to happen for you, it isn't always exactly what you want to happen" Gemma points out "And as much as I like your Mum's ring Chris, I want my own engagement ring to give to Matthew for his girlfriend. I want to pick it"
"That's... That's not how proposals are meant to work" Chris points out, a little dumbfounded by his girlfriend's logic "There's a whole element of surprise..."
"Chris, we have a kid together. There isn't a lot of surprise left" Gemma comments sarcastically and I have to smile a little.
"I mean it though Gemma, if you want Mum's ring, it's yours" I tell her and she grabs my hand and squeezes it.
"No, Chelsea. The ring should be yours. Besides, I've already picked my own" Gemma chuckles and I hug her, grateful for her kindness.
"You have?!" Chris asks, completely shocked
"Yes, that drawer is not a secure place to hide anything" Gemma points out "We'll talk about the magazines I found in there later"
I smirk a little and Gemma gives me a cheeky grin.
