"You want me to do what now?"
"You're not deaf, Matches." Yel sneered, rushing around his little library in his room, looking frantically around for a book.
Chuckling, I nodded, falling into the reading chair he had pressed against the wall opposite the door that led to his room. "You're right, I just wasn't paying attention."
Yel growled, "What has your generation become? Insulting elders. Badmouthing your parents. Doing it every five minutes."
"It?" I questioned, running my hands over the leather of the chair.
He nodded, tossing a book behind him, letting a few more fall as he searched. "Building shelves, riding the train."
I couldn't help a burst of laughter. Although he ignored me while he searched for his book, I found myself enjoying the scent of old books. I always loved the library simply for the smell. Not having the sense of smell I had then kind of made it all the more special as I closed my eyes. "I'm not good at fighting." I spoke, catching the scent of apples and crinkled my nose. Not a fan.
"You don't have to. I just want to test your reflexes." A moment later I heard a gasp and then a creak. Like breaking wood. Flinging to my feet, I ran to the little ladder he had and caught a falling Yel. Breathing heavy, I heard his heart beat slowly fall as I set him down, his fingers white around a large book. "Thank you," he breathed a sigh of relief as he glanced at the broken step. "I'll have to get one of those metal step ladders." He chuckled. "This one might be a few hundred years old."
"What's that?" I asked, nodding towards the book he held.
"Oh," Yel lifted the book, the cover dusty and hard to read, as if many hands had touched its surface, "This is my handy book on Alphas." He stared down at the cover for a moment, looking awestruck, "They say it is written by the Moon Goddess Herself." He looked like a total fanboy.
"So what are we doing with it?" I ask, watching him wipe the dust from its cover.
He smirked, "You are going to study it. Read everything written in it from cover to cover." A blush rose to his cheeks as he stared at the book lovingly, "I've already memorized it." I struggled to catch the heavy book as he tossed it to me.
I narrowed my eyes, "I have to study it? I have school-"
"And free time. Free time that should be spent studying what it means to be an Alpha." He pulled his mouth to the side, walking out ahead of me. "I haven't found anything in it pertaining to your situation, but then again, I wasn't looking for anything in particular."
My eyes skimmed the leather cover and I felt a heavy pull on my shoulders, like gravity was trying to take me down with it. I didn't know how I felt about this. About the strength and the senses that were way above my previous barely above human ones. And I felt a bit of guilt. While I didn't exactly like the Alpha, I felt bad for him. He was guarding his pack while I didn't have one, but was practically turning into an Alpha. I hadn't earned it, I hadn't fought for it. I just was.
