Shortly after releasing the news, I received a text from Dana. Cain had already tried to stop the fight from happening, but Dana quickly quoted his contract and shut him down. Regardless of what Cain wanted, he would be defending his title against Brock at UFC 205. The contract had been signed and everything was legally binding.
"Kate, it was nice meeting you. Brock was right, you're an asset to this team and I hope you'll continue to be involved in his training. We could use your expertise." Rodrigo stood in front of me as I sat cross-legged on an old rusty chair, waiting for Brock to come out of the showers.
I gave him a grateful smile. "It was nice meeting you. I can assure you that I will be here every step of the way, as Brock requested. I'll see you tomorrow at the press conference." He nodded and exited the gym with the other trainers as I waited patiently.
Glancing at my phone, I saw that it was nearly midnight. My heart sank in my chest as I realized I had skipped my fourth dose of meds. I grabbed my purse from beneath my feet as I scrambled to find the pill bottle. In one quick motion, I threw a tablet into my mouth and swallowed. I took several deep breaths to calm myself as I picked up my phone and set alarms to remind myself of my next doses. For a moment, I was scared. I had never missed a dose before but I had been busy today... I guess it just slipped my mind.
"Did the guys give you a headache?" Brock asked, walking toward me with his gym bag in hand. I was confused until I realized that he had been watching me.
I shook my head. "No, no, they were fine." Standing, I quickly changed the subject. "Are we ready to go now?"
"Whenever you are." I started walking toward the door as he followed. Once we were outside, he made sure everything was locked up before we got in the truck. "So, where do I need to drop you off? You never told me where you live."
I fasten my seatbelt as he slides the key into the ignition, making the truck roar to life. "The Hilton downtown. It's right beside the office."
He turned to me curiously. "The hotel? You live at the hotel?"
"I have a house outside the city... I just haven't been there in a while." Okay, maybe I lied. It's been longer than 'a while,' more like six months.
Brock pulled around the deserted building and onto the main highway. "Were you able to get your things? If not, tell me where to go, and I'll get 'em for you. He won't cross me, not without a boatload of security."
Knowing he had the wrong idea, I shook my head. "No one's there. Cain left on his own before I went into rehab. Dana took his keys from him while I was gone. As for my things, Dana's wife took me on a shopping spree when I got out. She thought it would help."
He paused as if fighting himself on whether or not to say something. "Do you want to go? If you do, I'll go with you. If it were my things, I'd want 'em."
There were a few things I had missed but I wasn't sure if I could face the memories. I had been warned by my psychiatrist that practically anything could set me back but especially things that I wasn't ready for. I knew I would eventually go back, even though Dana had mentioned selling it for me a couple of times. It was my home, I had lived there for nearly ten years and I refused to allow Cain to take it away from me.
"You know what, why not? I hate living out of suitcases and shopping bags anyway." I gave him the directions and within ten minutes, we were pulling into my neighborhood.
