“So what time is this new boyfriend of yours coming?” mom asked as I set the table. “I told him to come around 5.30,” I said. My parents were fine with my being gay, and I was so happy about it. It didn’t bother them at all.

“What’s this boy like?” dad asked curiously. “He’s really nice and funny,” I said dreamily and set the last plate down. The doorbell rang and my heart started slamming. “He’s here,” I said with a smile and rushed to answer the door.

“Hi Pierce!” I said as calmly as I could. He stepped into my house with a smile. He looked really nice. He was wearing black skinny jeans, a white T-shirt, and a green, white, and black plaid shirt over it. His hair was straightened neatly.

I couldn’t help but step forward and kiss him gently. “Are your parents no PDA kind of people?” he asked curiously when I stepped away. I shrugged. “Maybe right away, but they’ll get used to it the longer we date. So…stick to hugging and holding hands around them for a little,” I said as he slipped his Chucks off.

He followed me up the stairs to the dining room. “Mom, dad, this is Pierce,” I presented happily. They both smiled politely at Pierce.

“Hello Mr. and Mrs. Ryan. I’m Pierce Harts,” he said with a charming smile. He shook their hands politely and they greeted him.

We all sat down and my dad passed around the lasagna he made. “So Pierce, what are your parents like?” mom asked with a smile. “My dad works up at the offices near Westwood High. In his free time, he likes to work on cars and build things in our basement, like desks, clocks, and chairs out of wood,” Pierce said, easily slipping into a casual chatty mood.

“What about your mom?” mom asked, the smile still on her face. Pierce’s expression suddenly dropped. I had never asked Pierce about his mom. I had, after a few weeks, just assumed he lived with his father. He never mentioned her, and something had warned me not to ask.

Pierce expression suddenly looked a little terrified. “My parents divorced when I was little. I, uh, I live with my dad.” Mom, not seeming to get the hint to just stop, kept asking him questions about his mom.

“Oh? Do you spend weekends or holidays with your mom?” Pierce shrank in his seat a little and shook his head. “No. My dad got full custody.” “Why is that?” I really wished my mom would just see how uncomfortable this made Pierce and shut up.

“My mom was…uh…she’s an alcoholic. She was, uh, abusive,” he said silently. “Oh dear,” mom said, sympathy clear in her eyes. Pierce pushed his food nervously with his fork.

“So what do you like to do, Pierce?” dad asked, trying to quickly change the subject away from Pierce’s mom.

Pierce slowly became a little more comfortable. “I help my dad build things in the basement sometimes. I really just like to hang out with my dad and my friends,” he said with a casual shrug as the slight terror left his eyes.

“Play any instruments?” my mom asked. He shrugged again. “I can kind of play acoustic guitar, and I sing a little. I’m not good at either though.” He laughed a little.

“Do you have any siblings?” dad asked and Pierce shook his head. “Nah, and after babysitting my best friend’s little brother, I don’t want any,” he said with a joking smile.

“Well Pierce, after dinner, we usually watch a movie. What kind of movies are you into?” dad asked him. Pierce got a thoughtful face. “I’m mostly into older horror movies. Ones made between the 70s and the 90s, really. My dad and I watch those kinds of movies all the time.”

“Ever seen The Good Son?” I asked him and he nodded enthusiastically. “I love that movie!” I smiled. “We should watch it after dinner. It’s on Netflix.” I glanced at my parents and they smiled and nodded at us. “Sure, kids,” mom said.

So after dinner, we went to the living room and put on The Good Son. I snuggled up to Pierce and he wrapped an arm around me lovingly as we watched. I caught my parents smiling softly out of the corner of my eye during the part where they’re playing hide and seek.

Towards the end of the movie, Pierce’s phone started vibrating. “Hello?” he answered curiously. “Oh, hey dad. Yea, I’m at his house. Yea, I’ll leave now. Is everything okay? Okay, bye.” He hung up the phone and got up.

“I have to go. It was very nice meeting you,” Pierce said sincerely. I got up and followed him down the stairs as he put his Chucks on. “Is everything okay?” I asked in concern and he nodded. “Oh yea. My dad’s just freaking out because I haven’t checked in with him since I got here, and he needs my help at home. Bye Andre. I’ll see you tomorrow,” he said with a smile and pecked me on the lips.

I smiled and waved as he left my house. I went back up into my living room to watch the rest of the movie with my parents.

“I approve,” dad said with a nod as I sat down on the couch. Mom nodded. “Me too!” I smiled widely. “He seems like a very nice, well mannered young man,” dad said with a smile. “And I haven’t seen you this happy in a long time, Aleixandre.”

“He does make me happy. I’m glad you guys like him!” I said honestly. I turned my attention back to the TV screen just as Henry threw his sister onto the thin ice.
