Prologue:
“I love you,” he said as I watched his lips enunciate each word erratically. I shut my eyes, savoring our stolen moment, leaving in our neutral universe where nothing really matters, escaping the sanctimonious realm and living in a world just for the two of us—own rules, own time, own phase and own standards of right and wrong.
“I love you, too,” I replied. “More and more each day,” I whispered, his chest and arms enveloping my torsos. This was the only time we could be together—when no one was around, when no one was watching, when it was him and me and nobody else—the only time I could show him that I love him.
“Well, mine cannot grow more anymore, that I cannot love you more and more each day—it had reached its peak, Audrey, that I can’t add up any more to it. It’s beyond too much—too much that I wouldn’t really know what to do without you.” He sighed. He wasn’t really the man of words and I didn’t know why he needed to tell me that… I love him and he loves me; that was enough for me.
“Oh, Cliff,” I hugged him more tightly.
He is my cousin and I do love him. True love transcends everything, right?
