I had a terrible night's sleep. After I had called Derrick, I cried until I fell asleep. I was just happy that it was the next day and I could continue my journey. I packed up my stuff and went out to my car. I was almost to the passenger door when I saw that my tires had been destroyed. It looked like someone took a knife to each tire. All my hope of getting out of this motel was destroyed and it wasn't even eight in the morning.
I looked around to see if there was any evidence to help me figure out who had done this, but there was nothing. I looked closer at the motel's exterior and saw that it looked just as creepy during the day as it did at night.
"Great. This is just great."
I walked into the main lobby and walked over to the front desk. I was going to see if Mark had seen anyone around my car last night.
"Mark?" I said after not seeing anyone at the desk.
"Give me a second," he replied.
A minute later he came out from the back. "Hey," he said, looking away from me.
"Hey, did you see anyone around my car last night?" I asked, getting right to the point.
"No, why? Did something happen?"
"Yeah. Someone slashed my tires. Do you know how much it would cost to get new tires?"
"It would probably be around a grand for just the tires and then probably two hundred for them to come here and put them on for you."
I was six hundred dollars short. I was going to have to find another way to get around.
Mark saw the look on my face and asked, "You don't have that kind of money, do you?"
I shook my head no, feeling defeated. I just wanted to get away from everyone and stop screwing things up, but I can't even seem to stop screwing up my own life. I was emotionally drained and it wasn't even noon.
"You can work here. It pays fifteen dollars and hour and it's very easy work, since no one comes here."
Maybe this day wouldn't be too bad. I couldn't leave this motel, but I could at least fix my car.
"Okay."
"Great. I'll go get you a uniform," he said, turning around and heading into the back room.
I decided to check my phone while Mark was away. I had several calls from Derrick along with text messages. Derrick had left a voicemail at four in the morning, about a half an hour after I called him.
"Abi...please...come back. I am so sorry I told the principal. I will still leave you alone if that's what you want, but just please come home." There was some silence and then Derrick continued. "Abi, just please call me. I love you. I also will, no matter what."
His voicemail made tears appear in my eyes. I blinked quickly, dispersing the tears once I heard Mark coming closer. "We only have a women's uniform in a small. I don't know if that's your size, but that's all we have."
I was a medium, but I would have to fit into it because I needed this job. "That's fine. Thanks again."
I went to my room to drop off my bags in my room and change into the uniform. I was right that the uniform was a little too tight for me, but it would have to do. It also showed too much cleavage for a job in a motel. Once I was dressed in the uniform I headed back to the lobby.
I walked over to Mark. I could clearly see that Mark was very happy that the uniform was too tight. I did not want to be anywhere near him, but I needed to get this money so I could keep on traveling.
Mark quickly walked me through all the things that this job entails, which is not a lot. I just sat at the front desk all day, while Mark did something in the back room. I could care less what he was doing just as long as I stayed far away from him. The day passed by slowly, but no one came in so it was nice easy money. I spent the whole time reading a book.
That night when I was falling asleep, I couldn't help but feel strange. I felt like I was being watched, even though I was alone. I had a nightmare that night, causing me to wake up in the middle of the night.
I was back at school, but no one was here. I was the only one roaming the halls. No one seemed to be in the school at all. I kept walking, trying to find someone to tell me what was going on. I was rounding a corner when I heard a bunch of people yelling my name. I walked down the hall, wondering where those voices were coming from.
I found myself in the courtyard along with several other people who did not look too happy to see me. All my old friends as well as Derrick and my parents were there yelling at me. All of them were yelling telling me that I had ruined their lives, that I had made their life a living hell. Even Derrick told me he hated me and that he was stupid for thinking that he could ever love a girl like me.
I woke up, tears already running down my cheeks. I sat there crying, not sure what to do. All I could think about was Derrick and what he said to me in my dream. It made me start to think if he would ever really think that. Before I knew what I was doing I had my phone by my ear and the phone was ringing.
It was picked up by the second ring.
"Abi?!? Is that you?" Derrick answered.
I just kept crying.
His tone of voice softened. "Abi, what's wrong? You called me yesterday crying as well. What's wrong? Are you okay?"
I sobbed into the phone.
"I love you, Abi. Please talk to me."
"I'm sorry," I whispered before hanging up on him.
Derrick tried to call back many times, but I didn't answer. I turned off my phone and plugged it in to charge. As much as I love Derrick, he is better off without me.
