"so, you afraid of yourself, too?" cole asks, throwing his cigarette onto the road in front of us, then crushing it with his shoe.
i don't answer, just look at him, my eyes narrowed.
"it's okay, i know how denial is. you know it, everyone knows it, but you don't like it." he replies, making me question what the word 'it' means to him.
"you have a lot of nerve." i mutter, and he glances at me, grinning.
"i was hoping you'd say that." he says, his eyes sparkling.
"you're so contradicting." i sigh, and he smiles even wider.
"i know." but soon, the smile fades, and our silence fills the air.
his next words make me shiver in the dark night, "all the best people are."
