Harry's POV
I sat at the table eating cereal as everyone did their usual thing. Of course Skylar wasn't with us, she never was, she was probably in her room eating alone. There was a knock on the front door so Harper went to answer it. "Oh hi Brad." She smiled.
"Is Skylar here?" He grinned, he came around a lot to hang out with Skylar, they were best friends.
"Yeah you can just go up." Harper sighed, coming back and joining us at the table. If anyone said Skylar's name we all just sighed, she was nothing but a pain. "Can someone pass me the butter?" I grabbed the butter not even looking away from my phone and passed it to her. It was silent for a few more minutes until we heard running.
"Skylar's gone, and her room is empty." Brad breathed. For once, he had all of our attention.
"You're lying." John rolled his eyes and looked back to the sports section of the paper.
"The only things that are still there are the things that are too heavy to take out the window. Her covers are gone, clothes, the dogs, her rug, everything." Brad repeated.
"Damn it I'll check." I snapped dropping my phone on the table and jogging up the steps, sure enough he wasn't lying. Everything was gone, photos, nicknacks, anything and everything. "Holy shit." I breathed. I took Brad's phone from his hands and went straight to his favorites, clicking Skylar's contact. I waited impatiently until I heard ringing coming from her closet, I shoved the door open to see a shoe box and her phone sitting on it.
"She actually ran away." Brad breathed, tears streaming down his face. I opened the box, inside were a pile of letters. I flipped through them. To Harper, To John, To Mom, To Jesse, To Gemma, To Harry, To Gabe, To Matt, To Dad, To Brad, To Mom on her Wedding Day, To John's Wife on their Wedding Day, To my Future Nieces and Nephews- I stopped looking, she was really planning on never coming back. I flipped back to my letter and tore it open. There was only one sentence in the middle of the page.
...
I told you you wouldn't have to worry about me anymore.
...
No signature, nothing. Nothing except those words, the last words she ever said to me were the last ones she's ever written to me too. I took a deep breath and handed Brad his letter. He opened it quickly, it was quiet for a minute until he read another page. "Your letter has two pages?" I breathed, suddenly insecure about my sentence.
"She basically told me a thousand times that it had nothing to do with me, or anyone, that she just had to leave." He sniffed. "And to try not to look for her, and the process of leaving."
"What do you mean about the process of leaving?" I questioned, he just handed me one of the pages. My eyes scanned it nervously as I read out loud.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you I was leaving, I just needed it to be secret. It started with renting out a storage unit in a different name. Then slowly and surely every night I'd take things and put them in it, packing what I brought the day before. I always thought someone would notice and stop me, but no one ever came up to see me so they never did. It helped remind me how insignificant I really am, and that was the day I took all of my money out of my bank account. I never told you about the day Harper changed, I finally told her that she didn't know what I was going through and she snapped, she hates me now, she won't miss me." I took a deep breath as tears filled my eyes, I noticed the whole family was on the stairs listening to me. "I didn't tell anyone that I went to wake up my friend, to find him dead in his bed. I didn't tell them all I see when I close my eyes is him, cold, and alone. I didn't tell them I fell in love too late. Or that I would have spent my last day apologizing to him.
