I knew him the second I saw him. A ball of rage formed in the bit of my stomach. What I wanted to know was why he was here. He wasn’t allowed to be. He was the cause of all of the police cars and yelling I heard next door growing up. He was the cause of her pain. He hurt her in every way possible. “So what are you doing here at 2 in the afternoon?” I asked as they were making the drinks.

“My daughter was taken so I’m going to find her.” He breathed. She wasn’t taken, she ran away, I knew not to fall for his shit, Skylar warned me about him. “She’s probably about your age, sandy brown ish blonde hair.

“How long ago did she go missing?” I asked, pretending I didn’t know.

“A week or so ago.” He mumbled. I wanted to punch him straight across the face for some reason. But then I noticed the gun in his back pocket and my heart stopped. “I’ve been looking for her everywhere. I promised her I’d take care of her, so I’m going to bring her back.

“Is that why there’s a gun in your back pocket?” I asked nonchalantly.

“I don’t know what kind of people she’s with.” He snapped.

“I’m sorry sir you have a gun?” The bartender asked. “For the safety of everyone here we aren’t allowed to have guns in here.”

“You think I’m going to shoot people?” He laughed obviously annoyed.

“No but a drunk person could take it from you.” The guy explained. “I’m sorry sir.”

“It’s fine.” He breathed dropping money on the counter and leaving. The second he was gone Skylar came out of the bathroom and they handed me the drinks.

“You’re dad-” I whispered.

“Why do you think I had to go to the bathroom so bad?” She laughed quietly. We googled a ski resort and took off. Skylar staring out the window the whole entire time, her hand in Zayn’s.

For once, a pang hit my stomach.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt jealousy over a girl before.

But she wasn’t just a girl,

She was Skylar.

Skylar’s POV

We ran up to the top of the hill, wearing our normal outfits and skis and snowboards on our feet in the 75 degree weather. We all went down the hill, I saw a beautiful little cove and turned stopping and sitting in it. Zayn came over to me. “What’s wrong?” He asked, everyone was already on their way to the bottom of the hill except for us.

“The man that came in, with a gun... he was my dad.” I breathed.

“Your dad?” Zayn asked. “I guess I never really knew much about him.” He breathed.

“I’d never seen him that frustrated before. Or actually carrying his gun around with him.” I told him, my body glowing with anxiety. “Zayn what if he hurts someone because of me? I can’t have that happen.”

“He won’t Skylar.” Zayn breathed.

“You can’t say that, you don’t know him. He used to beat me because I forgot to throw away an empty bag of popcorn!” I spat.

“He beat you...” he mumbled. I nodded weakly.

“Why do you think I left?”

“You were unhappy.” Zayn breathed.
