Victoria helped Stephan to his room. As soon as he got there he plopped down on his bed and lay down.
“Stephan, are you okay?”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. It just hurts a bit.”
“Can I do anything for you?”
“Um, hand me some of those pills over there,” she reached over and looked in the bottle.
“Stephan, it’s empty.”
“Darn it. I must have used the rest of them last time I cut myself.”
“Stephan, I thought you stopped that!”
“Some time it’s necessary.”
“It’s never necessary to hurt yourself.”
“Victoria, is this really the time to lecture me on this?”
“No, I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay.”
“Is there anything else I can do for you?”
“I don’t know.”
“Here,” she said picking up a towel that was on the ground and starting to wipe up the blood, “we need to do something.”
“I know. We need to get out.”
“No, that’s not what I meant. We need to tell someone about this.”
“Are you kidding me, we can’t tell anyone about this.”
“We have to do something!”
“Yeah, I know we do, but if we say anything dad could get shipped off. Prison maybe. At the least I’d mean a foster home for us, at least until we’re eighteen.”
“Maybe prison is the best place for him to be. He shouldn’t be hurting you like this.”
“I know he shouldn’t but it’s just what he does. I can’t change that about him.”
“With him being a grown man and all you would think he’d learn that he can’t get everything he wants all the time.”
“Well he hasn’t. That’s why my mother left.”
“What did he do to her?”
“I’d rather not talk about it.”
“Okay then.”
“The point to all this is, we can’t change him, so we need to change ourselves. At least we need to get out of the situation. Get away from here, away from him.”
“But, can we?”
“I don’t know.”
“Stephan, give me all your knives.”
“Why?”
“Because you’re being all emotional again. You’ll end up hurting yourself or someone else.”
“Well I’m not giving them to you, last time I did that you went and hurt yourself.”
“I won’t this time. I promise.”
“Fine.”
“So where are they?”
“There are some in the dresser, under my pillow, in the desk…under the bed…and I think that’s all.”
“Holy crap that’s a lot.”
“I know.”
“What were you planning on killing yourself or something,” she said, walking around the room and grabbing all the knives.
“At one point.”
“Well, I never want you to have to feel like that again,” she said picking up the last of the weapons.
“As long as you stay with me I don’t think I will.”
“I won’t leave you.”
“Okay. What are you going to do with those knives?”
“Hide them.”
“Where?”
“Hmm. Close your eyes.”
“Victoriathis is ridiculous.”
“Close your eyes.”
“Fine. They’re closed now.”
She went hiding the knives in random spots of the room where she figured he would never find them. After a few minutes she had hidden them all. She got into bed with Stephan and kissed him.
“All done hiding them then?”
“Yup.”
“Are you sleeping with me?”
“Yup,” she said, putting her arms around him.”
“Never letting me go either, are you?”
“Not a chance,” she said kissing him again, and then they both fell asleep.
