The rest of the day was miserable for Stephan, what Victoria had said, I love him, haunted his mind. He couldn’t stand the thought of her with anyone but himself. Anyone who could even have the slightest chance of coming in between him and the girl he loved, well that guy needed to be eliminated. He just wanted to know who this guy was, and the best way to rip out his throat, or anything…he just didn’t know, and what he didn’t know was killing him.
On the other hand, allVictoriacould think about was the guy she liked. She thought she liked him, well she knew she liked him. Now love, that was in question. She knew him well, she had known him since she had been at the school, they talked lots, and she thought that he liked her too…but then again, love, that was in the question there as well.
Once school was officially over Victoria and Stephan meet outside on the school lawn, next to the old oak tree.
“Hi Stephan, how was school?”
“Terrible as always,” he said, but really thought, ‘is she blind?’
“Ah, I’m sure it wasn’t that bad.”
“You don’t know the half of it.”
“Okay then. Do you have any homework?”
“Only a lot. I doubt I’ll be able to get it all done before the dance.”
“You do realize the dance isn’t until tomorrow, right?”
“Yeah, your point?”
“Do you want me to help?”
“Yes, or else I am going to fail. Fail so badly that my grandchildren will talk about it.”
“Okay, I’ll help you once we get home.”
“Good,” they started walking down the road to their house. Stephan was now a bit happier. Maybe once she helped him he would be able to weasel the name out of her, and maybe try to tell her that he didn’t want to go to the dance as friends…maybe I should keep that last part to myself he thought.
It was a silent walk home, as they were both lost in their own trains of thought. They walked in the door.Victoriawent over to the door of her room and casually threw her backpack in there and then went back to the living room to help Stephan. He had already gotten his books and folders out of his backpack and was sitting on the couch, resting his feet on the coffee table with the TV on.
“Stephan, you’re never going to learn anything if all you do is sit on the couch and watch TV.”
“I’m not just sitting on the couch and watching TV, see, my books are out.”
“Yeah, but they’re not going to do much good if they aren’t open.”
“There,” he said flicking open the cover, “it’s open.”
“Very funny. Now turn off the TV and sit up.”
“Fine,” he said, lazily reaching over to grab the remote and click the ‘power’ button to turn off the TV, he took his feet off the table, and moved over a bit so that Victoria would have more room to sit down. “Happy Girly?”
“Yes. Now what exactly do you need help on?”
“Everything.”
“That helps.”
“Ha, I’m not supposed to be helping you, you’re supposed to be helping me.”
“Thanks, I love you too.” Once she said that the thoughts came back to him about earlier that day, love.
“HeyVictoria?”
“Yeah?”
“You never told me the name of the guy you like.”
“I didn’t did I?”
“No, you didn’t.”
“Oh, okay, well I’m not going to yet.”
“Why not?”
“I’ve told you, this guy, he’s different.”
“Well, I don’t see how he could be that much different from any of the other guys you’ve liked.”
“Well he is.”
“How so?”
“You wouldn’t understand.”
“Bull.”
“What?”
“How do you not think I wouldn’t understand, we’re best friends! Or at least I thought we were…”
“Of course we’re best friends. I- I just want to keep this one to myself.”
“Sure you do. What’s the real reason behind this, besides that he’s ‘different’?”
“I don’t have to answer to you! Look, I’ve known you for years and you’ve never even told me one girl that you like. Why is that Stephan? I really doubt you can go sixteen years without liking someone.”
“Well I don’t ‘like’ anyone.”
“Bull. Now that is bull.”
“You don’t believe me?”
“No.”
“Fine. Fine. You know, I’ll just do this myself.”
“That’s good with me!” she said, storming out of the living room and into her own room, slamming the door behind her. ‘What did I do?’ he thought, wishing he wouldn’t have said anything now. Once he had really finished his homework, which he didn’t do very well because of the lack of concentration he had, he went and knocked onVictoria’s door to try to apologize.
“Hey,Victoria, can I come in?”
“No, what do you want?”
“I’m sorry.”
“What are you sorry for?”
“For being a jerk and questioning you about things I shouldn’t be questioning you about.”
“Fine. I accept your apology.”
“Victoria, one more thing.”
“What’s that?”
“Will you still go to the dance with me?”
“Yes, just don’t be a jerk.”
“Okay I promise. I Stephan Robertson, will not be a jerk.”
“Thanks, and Stephan?”
“Yeah?”
“I’ll give you one clue. He goes to our school.”
“Okay thanks.”
One clue…at least I’m getting somewhere he thought.
