She woke up before him this morning. The sun was just coming up and the light form it was shining through the blinds of the window. She noticed that he must have turned in the night because now his arms were around her. She tired to get out of bed, but his grip was stronger than she thought it was and she didn’t want to wake him. Laying back down in defeat she tried to sleep again. An idea pounded in her head and she just had to do it, sleep wasn’t important. She looked over and grabbed her cell phone off the bedside table and dialed the number for the police.
“Hello, this is the Mastertown Police Department. Do you have an emergency?”
“Yes.”
“What is it?”
“It’s my boyfriend’s dad. He hurt him last night.”
“Hurt him how?”
“Well they had gotten into a fight, and they pulled knives out on each other, and—“
“Ma’am, calm down. What exactly happened?”
“Well I didn’t see the whole fight, but a few seconds after I walked in on this his father had managed to cut him.”
“Is everyone okay?”
“Yes, this was yesterday. I just wasn’t able to call yesterday because my boyfriend didn’t want his dad to get in trouble.”
“Well, it’s a good thing you did call. People that hurt people need to be stopped.”
“I know, that’s what I told him.”
“So who was it that hurt you’re boyfriend?”
“Mr. Robertson, a teacher in the private school.”
“Are you there now?”
“Yes.”
“Okay, we need evidence to jail him. Are there any marks form the attack?”
“Yes, he has a big cut on his arm.”
“Okay, thank you. We’ll be there in a bit.”
“Okay, thank you.” She said and the phone hung up.
She went back to cuddling with Stephan not exactly sure what to do next.
“Girly, I know you’re awake.”
“Oh.”
“I heard you talking.”
“Yeah. Ignore that.”
“You sounded serious on the phone, who were you talking to anyway.”
“The police.”
“Why were you doing that?”
“I just called the cops on your dad.”
“You did what?” he said sitting up and removing his arms from her, “Why would you do that?”
“I don’t want you getting hurt again.”
“Girly, I won’t get hurt again. He’s my dad, he won’t do it again.”
“Stephan you’re lying to yourself. You even told me last night that your dad was always going to be that way, that there was no way we could never change him, that the only way to be safe was to get away from him, because he could hurt us!”
“I know I said that…but I can be wrong.”
“Stephan, no. This needed to be done. You need to be safe, and you can’t be safe around him.”
“Is there anything I can do to change your mind?”
“No, I don’t think there is. The cops are already on the way. I’m going back to my room and changing and getting ready to talk to them.”
“But Girly…”
“I’m doing what I think is right. If you really want you can stay here and defend a man that’s willing to hurt you!” She screamed at him and then left the room and slammed the door.
She couldn’t take two steps without falling and sitting down right outside the door thinking about what she had just done. He hated her now, she knew it. She shouldn’t have called the cops, but it was the right thing to do…
He kept sitting up in his bed thinking about what he had just said. He had screwed up again. He shouldn’t have said anything. She was right; he just didn’t want to admit it. He loved his father, but he knew that he needed to be away. They needed to be safe, and like she had said, being away from him was the only way to do it. He collapsed back into bed and pulled out the last knife that he knew where it was. He picked it up, ready to reopen the cut that his father had just given him the day before. The knife was almost on his skin before he changed his mind and threw it against the wall. He wouldn’t hurt himself anymore, not because of him; not for anyone.
