~ (y/n)'s P.O.V. ~
I groaned, slowly moving my arms to the side, expecting my fingers to meet Newt as they always did when I woke up, but my hand only met air before my hand slipping down the side of the bed. I opened my eyes, blinking them slowly as I moved to push myself up, looking around. I was in the Med-jack hut. I pushed myself up further, shifting my leg. I stopped, hissing in pain. Newt appeared in the doorway, eyes widening when he saw me.
"(y/n), for the love of-" Newt cut himself off, rushing to me. I frowned at him as gently placed a hand on my back to help me sit up, pausing every few seconds to adjust me so my legs didn't move as much. I huffed, looking back at him as finished helping me up.
"What is that all for?" I wanted to feel irritation for Newt not letting me sit up on my own, but the worry shining in his eyes made me soften.
"You have to take it slow, your leg just got hurt again." I sighed, nodding as he sat behind me on the table, I leaned against him. I studied my legs, looking at the stitches that lined where George had thrown the large knife.
"When did I get dressed? Am I wearing your shirt" Newt coughed as he stiffened against me.
"I- I swear I didn't mean to disrespect you if you feel like I did, I just didn't want to take you to the Med-jack hut just in your undergarments and I couldn't put pants on you so I-" I smiled lightly, reaching my hand back to grasp his hand.
"Thank you for thinking about that." I leaned farther back against him.
"Give it to me straight, Newt. I know you're worried and don't want to tell me something, but you have to." Newt sighed behind me. He let go of my hand to shift his body. His arm looped around my waist and he held me close against him, kissing my temple.
"Scott and Aidan and Jeff got the knife out, stopped the bleeding, and everything else they needed to, but certain muscles may have been cut or weakened when the knife hit. I mean, it was a big knife (y/n). When he threw it he was intent on making a kill, until Gally hit him and his aim went off." I hummed.
"You're stalling for something else." Newt squeezed his arm tighter around me.
"They said you'll heal, in time, but they also said the wound healing is different from you being able to walk again." Newt's voice was a hesitant whisper, wafting through strands of my hair. I clasped my hands together, feeling tears fill my eyes. Newt quickly noticed, scooting himself so he could look at my face.
"Hey, love, I know it's bad, I know that hurts, but at least you're alive, right?" Newt cupped my face in his hands, gently kissing my nose. I sighed, nodding slowly. He was right. At least I was alive, at least Newt was alive.
"And I'll be here, all the way, whatever you need me for. Remember, we're a team." I nodded, leaning into his touch.
"What happened to George? The black veins, they-" Newt nodded.
"We know. They checked on him in here before he got put in the Slammer. Clint pulled Jeff halfway through him and Aidan taking care of your leg, and that's when Scott joined in."
"What are they going to do with him?"
"Well, a lot of the Gladers have been coming up with punishment ideas, but a lot of them thought we should wait for you to have the final say and be at the meeting for it." I froze, Newt noticed. "They thought since you're the one who got hurt by him, but-" I shook my head, pulling away from Newt's cupped hands.
"But he was coming to kill you. I wasn't his target."
"I know, but the Gladers don't see it that way. I told Alby you wouldn't want to, but he said we'd just have to wait until you woke up." I frowned, looking down.
"I can't even walk, how am I supposed to make a decision?" Newt shrugged. "What are they even talking of doing?"
"The most popular idea is to have him be the one to test our escape ideas. The Runners are tired of coming back and saying they haven't found anything, and the Glade is getting anxious. Others say to leave him in the Slammer or Banish him." I looked at Newt, frowning.
"Banish him?" Newt nodded.
"You're not going to like it, but it's where the Gladers trap the person in the Maze right before the doors close." I swallowed, remembering the Grievers, their hold on me, stumbling later in the dark as I looked for a door back into the Glade. I shook my head, a sick feeling in my stomach.
"Anything but that. I couldn't live with myself." Newt nodded.
"I know, I didn't think you'd choose that one anyway." I turned to look out the small Med-jack hut window. The sun was beginning to set.
"I'll think about it." I whispered.
"No rush, love." Newt gently kissed my cheek, then my jaw, then my neck. He gave me a lopsided smile when I turned, looking at him with my own smile. Newt grabbed my hands, looping his fingers through mine. Outside, the dinner bell rang.
