~ (y/n)'s P.O.V. ~

"What if I don't make it?" My voice was quiet as I stared down at my feet.

"You will." I glanced up at Newt. He was sitting close to my side, eyes trailing over my face until I looked away.

"How do you know?" Newt scoffed beside me, tilting my head with a finger so I was looking at him again.

"Because I've known you for six years. You can do this." I swallowed, looking at Newt. He grabbed my hand, running his thumb over my knuckles. "I swear you will make it, through every thing they toss at us, you will make it. We'll make it. We're a team, every step of the way." I nodded, taking in Newt's face with the few passing seconds. He had a small cut under his right eye, and a bruise forming along the his jawline. There was a slight slant in his nose from when he broke it in a trial a year ago, and his lips quirked in a smile the longer I studied him.

Someone cleared their throat, making both me and Newt jump. In the doorway stood a man in a black suit.

"(y/n), it's time." I looked back to Newt, wide-eyed.

"You can do it, remember, we're a team, you just have to trust me." I nodded, scanning his face as he frowned. He was guilty, but of course he was. He did the trials yesterday. He passed, but wasn't allowed to tell me what he did, and he felt bad because he wasn't able to. The man came and grabbed at my wrist pulling me towards the door before I could say anything else.

"Samantha?" Her dark locks covered over her golden eyes, then she tilted her head to make eye contact with me. I was across a fighting cage from her. She was one of the other girls that was in the trials. "I don't want to hurt you."  I called as she stepped forward.

"Then you'll make this easy." Samatha rushed at me. She bent and rammed into my stomach, throwing me back into the cage. I let out a groan, wheezing out at my loss of breath. Samantha backed away, a small smile on her face. She pulled a fist back, then punched down towards my face, but I blocked her. She growled, grasping at my hands, digging her nails into my skin. Immediately, I thought of Newt, what would happen if I failed this test.

"I won't let you take him from me." I thrust forward with my weight, pushing Samantha off of me. She yelped in surprise as I scrambled up. I reached back, grabbing at the cage. I started climbing up the bars as Samantha stood.

"You can't escape like that. You'll have to come down soon enough." I reached the top of the cage and started going across the cage like monkey bars. I huffed, pulling my feet up when Samantha jumped up at my feet, trying to grab me. I made it halfway across the cage when Samantha caught my foot and yanked me down. I screamed as I fell, hitting the ground hard. I heard one of my arms crack underneath my weight, but barely had time to register the pain as Samantha yanked at my hair, pulling me up. I yelled out, grabbing back with my unhurt hand. Samantha knelt by my ear, whispering.

"You were too weak for this, (y/n), you aren't even supposed to be here. You won't make it to the end with Newt, hell, you know what happens to Newt when you don't make it." She slammed my head down into the ground and got off of my back. I groaned, turning over, gasping for breath as my nose bled.

"I won't... I won't let them hurt him." I coughed, sitting up and looking at her. Samantha smiled at me.

"Too late, sweetheart." She pulled her fist back, ready to hit me, but I caught her hand, wincing at the sharp pain in my arm as I punched her with my other hand. She stumbled back and I got up. I hit her again and this hit sent her sprawling. She groaned, laying on the ground and holding her nose. Her eyes flashed briefly in the light. I looked around the cage, then approached the wall again, yanking on one of the bars. I heard Samantha growl under her breath as she stood, approaching behind me. The bar came loose in my hand as I yanked again, then it fully came out. I turned, swinging the bar. It hit Samantha on the side of her head. She crumbled to the ground. I stood for a few seconds over her, then dropped the bar.

"I told you. I won't them."  My voice was a whisper as guards and medics came in. Medics went to her immediately, and a guard came to grab me, but when he grabbed my arm, I screamed out. He yanked his hand away in surprise as I seethed in pain. The guard moved to grab my shoulder, gently, and he led me to my shared room with Newt room. Newt jumped when the door opened. When I saw him I started crying. I couldn't even stop when a doctor came in to look at my arm. After the doctor had set my arm, casted it, and left, Newt held me close to him.

"I just got so... protective." I whispered. Newt nodded, releasing a breath into my hair.

"I know, Love, I know." I closed my eyes, inhaling deeply.

When I  opened my eyes, I was on a rooftop, sitting on the railing. The surrounding area was covered by dead grass, though I knew at some point it was beautiful. I looked down below me as the roof door opened.

"(y/n)?" Newt's voice was hesitant as he came closer.

"I'm not going to jump, if that's what you're thinking. I just... I couldn't be in there with them showing those videos of our fights." Newt nodded, leaning against the railing beside me.

"I know. I saw your fight." I swallowed, looking out. "(y/n)... All of us, we've done bad things because we were essentially programmed by WICKED to do so. We do what we have to so we can survive. Samantha, that isn't on you." I sighed, nodding.

"It's just... a heavy feeling."  I realized I had begun to cry. Newt wrapped a arm around my waist, gently pulling me back from sitting on the railing. Once I was on the ground, he turned me around and hugged me.

"I know, but we made it as a team, okay? Just like I said we would. We both got to the next level, we're both still together, and that's what matters right now, all right? Don't think about Samantha, or the trials, just know we'll make it out soon, and we'll make it out together." I nodded, tightening my hold on around him.

"Thank you."

I woke up, sucking in a deep breath. I looked to my right and saw Newt was still asleep, but the sun was beginning to come up. I rubbed at my face, realizing my cheeks were wet and that I was crying. I wiped at my face as something beyond the maze screeched close to the door. I looked up at the sky, listening as there was a faint metal scuttle. Something was close, but it couldn't get to us, not yet.
