Both suffered from insomnia as an anxiety reaction when performing.

Michael's insomnia was much more severe as it was a side effect of lupus and began in his early childhood, when his sleep was interrupted by his father, who wanted to make sure his children locked the window and put on masks to scare them into obedience. Michael was also a light sleeper all his life, but became so depressed (or sick?) in his final days he is reported to have slept 15 hours per day.
