Rule #7: A Black Eye A Day Keeps the Headaches Away
“H-He said he needed some space!” Audrey wailed for about the fiftieth time that hour. Pursing my lips, I patted her back.
“Auds, it’s okay,” I said, stifling a yawn. It was almost 2 a.m. “Listen, I’m going to be giving him a piece of my mind tomorrow. Until then, get some rest. You’ve had a rough night.”
She looked up at me with swollen eyes. “But –”
“No buts,” I quickly interrupted before she could get into another hour long tirade of the plans she had for tonight and how they clearly didn’t work out.
“My head hurts,” she complained as I lead her inside her room and helped her get onto her bed, dress and all.
“Shh. I know. I’ll get you some green tea, okay?” She nodded and I tucked her in before heading to the kitchen. When I was safely out of Audrey’s sight and hearing range, I let the anger I had been stalling come over me. Looking down at my phone that I had swiped from her purse after laying her down, I furiously dialed Cody’s number.
“Hello?”
“What did you do to her?” I gritted out, seething.
“Whoa, dude, calm down, I never –”
“Don’t bullshit me!”
“I’m not! Listen, I just told her I couldn’t sleep with her! Not tonight, and I hope she got the message that it was going to never happen!”
“She got the message? You listen up, punk. She trusted you. I trusted you. I don’t know what happened last time, or what happened tonight, but you hurt her. Again. You’re dead, Cody.”
“Jeez, I’m sorry! What did you want me to do? Sleep with her? First off, we’ve only been dating like, two months! And second, I’m gay!”
Feeling my own headache coming on, I pinched the bridge of my nose in frustration. “You need to get your shit together, Cody, and make sure that shit stays out of Audrey’s life,” I hissed and hung up the phone, throwing the mug I held at the wall.
Goddammit, now I’d need to make another green tea. A vein in my forehead throbbed.
Make that two more.

“Audrey, you’ve got to go the doctor,” May cajoled as Jay and I stood at the sides of the armchair Audrey had been sulking in for the past week.
“This isn’t healthy,” I added, sitting down on one knee beside May and looking up at the haggard mess that was my best friend.
She looked at me through greasy strands of hair. “I don’t care.”
Oh, hell, Audrey, why are you doing this? I sighed, raking a hand through my hair. Standing up, I crossed my arms. “Auds, I’ve had enough. I’m officially kicking you out.”
Jay crossed over to sit in my vacant spot. “Audrey, Cody is a douche. I mean, love, I’d bang you right her right now, you’re that smokin’ – ow!”
Jay turned and scowled at the place where my rubber band had hit his arm. I brought up another one to fire at him, giving him a warning glare.
“Dude, Audrey’s like my sister; you know I’m not into the whole bang-your-sister thing! I was just stating the obvious – that she’s sexy enough to –”
