Chapter 5

"Come on! I want to help!" Kyle's tone was childish. He wanted to convincing her to let him go back to the lower floors and assist beyond the gates, but she was not having it. Tim just looked around knowing what was best. His brothers watched him, knowing that even though they were great warriors, they were never trained in real life. It was safest to keep them away from the gateways. As the youngest brother, he always needed protection.

"Sorry but you have to stay up here," Heidi replied. She had taken the responsibility of making sure all of the children made it up. Gloria and her two group members discussed what they were going to try for the rest of the day. They volunteered to watch over the children. "You will still be helping us...just where it is safer."

Kyle turned away, sulking into a corner with his arms crossed and lip pouting. Satisfied, Heidi walked back into the lower corridors and closed the door behind her, joining Mila, Levi and Sin again. Brad, Vax, Majesty and Maester were their second group. They would be there for aid and to switch off shifts to see if there was anything they missed. They had four different rooms to look at, one of them being the one they visited the previous day. This time, Brad's group would go in. Hopefully they would not meet the zombies again. Heidi hoped they hadn't returned to where they were before, and she could tell Mila felt the same.

The other groups already left for the day. As she joined her own group, they walked quickly through the crypt and towards the room from yesterday. Mila's eagerness was clear in her quick step. When they reached the first door, they walked in knowingly but cautiously.

Before Brad and his team would enter through the gateway, Mila looked around the room on the other side, double checking to see if anyone was in the room or outside. After giving the all clear, Vax entered first followed by the rest of the group. They stepped through cautiously, feeling the strange, semi tangible barrier as they entered. Mila and Heidi sat down on the bed from the original room, watching as they disappeared beyond the door. Brad stayed behind momentarily, looking back at his friends.

"You guys can go where you like, but I suggest staying away from the place we went yesterday. I don't know if there are any zombies left there...just be careful, no matter where you go," Mila looked at him with concern. He nodded in understanding before walking out of the room and down the hall, leaving the door open. Mila smiled, glad he was smarter than they were yesterday. If they needed to run, it would be easy to run through an open door.

Mila watched the room on the other side, looking through the gateway and wondering who lived there. Sinister stood at the gateway, observing just as Mila was, but her eyes were less observant. Levi sat in the front corner of the room away from the gate, sharpening his sword with a small rock. He knew his priorities. Defense over knowledge was the key to surviving a blood bath of enemies that do not have a sense of strategy.

"Want to do our weapons while you are at it," Mila asked randomly, catching his gaze for a moment. He looked up at her thoughtlessly, his focus broken. When he registered what she said, he smiled and held his hand up to Heidi. She looked at him, unsure of what to do. She finally dropped her huge sword into his hand. The weight of it almost knocked him over.

Leroy curled up on the floor, tucking his giant paws underneath him. As of now, Levi was the only one without a companion. Mila knew it made him uncomfortable, especially because we all relied on our animals.

"Miss your pup don't you?"

Levi looked up at her as she cut through the silence again. He nodded, lowering his head back to his work. Heidi could see the change in his facial expression. His jaw loosened, his gaze falling away. "Nero is still too young to be out on his own."
