Chapter 31

After reading through every book in Mellonia's library and learning how to summon and control magic, Mila felt better about changing in and out of wolf form. She was now able to control it without needing adrenaline. Unfortunately she could not suppress it when she was angry. For the past few weeks she was either angry, sad, or deep in thought. There was never an in-between.

Lillianna approached her, on the lounge, sitting across from her quietly. When she looked up, Mila was surprised to see the shy and uncertain look on her face. "Griss and I want to go find Heidi and Calynn. We're unsure if Draco's return meant they are leaving or if they are in trouble."

Mila nodded to her. "Okay, just come back as soon as you can. We'll be leaving soon. I don't want to be stuck here when I'm not able to be in the game."

Lillianna nodded, gathering her things as Griss handed them to her. The pair of them bid goodbye to everyone. Lillianna placed a hand comfortingly on Mila's lap for a moment before following Griss out the door.

"Ready for your last lesson by me for the time being," Mellonia asked. "You've been here two weeks now. A third of that time you have been sulking, but I think I'm getting through to you. From here on out, all I can give you is a little advice. Now, let's get going. We need to get to the peak of the southernmost mountain."

Mila followed her up the mountain. After spending weeks there, the mountains were an easy climb. Mila stepped behind Mellonia, just in case the older woman was to fall. In reality, the mountains were easier to climb for her than it was for Mila. When they neared the top, she suddenly turned towards the edge of the rock and stood looking out towards the ocean to the south.

"So what is in store for today," Mila asked after a few moments of silently watching the clouds brush over the two mountains far in the south. When looking to the left, the sun was visible just above another mountain range. The sun cascaded soft light over the cool morning air. Although she enjoyed the calmness around them, she wanted to know their last lesson, and why only Mila was a part of it.

"I want to talk to you about alchemy. I want you to be able to connect science with magic, because it may help you understand why your body can change. It will also help you understand magic a little better, however slight."

"I thought the change was all about magic. I mean, she did cast some sort of spell on me didn't she?"

"Well think of it this way, magic is the unexplained, in a way like religion. It has to do with the spirit part of humanity. There is no tangible spirit, it can be seen and can be sensed by other senses, but it cannot be touched and cannot alter things on this side of the world. Magic is created from spiritual energy. It can create something from nothing."

"What do you mean?"

"In science, it is believed that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only altered by reactions between different things. Alchemy is based off of that, and is also the most basic kind of magic next to nature magic. It can also enhance spells. That's why potions are useful. Magic is when you can forget about all of science's terms and create some sort of energy from nothing. Take fire wielding for example. You can create fire from nothing when using magic, but-"

"But to keep it going it needs fuel. Like oxygen?"

"Precisely," she nodded, turning to Mila. She bent down and touched the rock in front of her as she touched it, the rock glowed with strange markings before shifting into a flat stone plate, markings etched into it. "But in alchemy there is something they use to help enhance the magical part of it. It's called alchemite, a mineral that attracts magic. They make tablets or jewelry with it. Those crystals you have contain fairy magic, but the stones have their own kind of magic, one that comes straight from the earth. No one has ever been able to explain its origin. The only ones who have come close are the fairies and the elves, but they never expose their secrets to save the planet from destruction."
