Chapter 30
When Mila returned to Mellonia's hut, everyone was awake, sitting in the living room in tense wait. Griss was bent over, elbows on her knees with her eyes on the door. When she spotted Mila entering, she bolted up and ran towards her, everyone following.
"Where did you two go?" Griss looked past Mila for a quick moment, realizing there was only one of them. "Where is Heidi? Wasn't she with you? What the hell happened?"
Mila didn't answer, instead she walked into the hut and sat on the lounge, curling herself into a ball and resting her head on her knees. Calynn looked down at her, her eyes glossed with worry. "Well?"
"Heidi ran northeast. She probably won't come back."
"What happened?" Mo looked at Mila, seeing the clear discomfort in her eyes. Mila still couldn't understand the feelings currently clouding her mind. She felt emotions overwhelming her to the point she felt numb to everything around her.
"We got into an argument," Mila stated. "and she said...she told me she was falling in love with me."
No one spoke, but Griss settled down on the couch across from her. Her eyes moved from the ground to making eye contact with Mila. Mila could see it in her eyes, she already knew. "Why didn't anyone say anything if all of you already knew?"
"It was something you and Heidi needed to discuss alone." Griss spoke. "Of course we are here for support, but it wasn't something we could discuss with you. Either you needed to smarten up and figure it out yourself, or she needed to tell you. It just happened to be the latter, and from what I gather it didn't go so well."
Mila raised an eyebrow. "No shit."
"You should really go after her," Calynn stepped in. "I'm sure she is hurting and needs your comfort."
"When we argued, she wanted nothing from me. She wanted me to leave her alone." Mila tightened her arms around her legs, feeling the pain bearing onto her entire body. "I couldn't help her when I should have."
"She still needs comfort, Mila."
Mila looked up at her. "There is nothing I can do. I'd just drive her away."
"If you aren't going to, then I'll go find her," Calynn stood and walked towards the door. She only paused when Mellonia spoke.
"Take Drogon with you. If you happen to pass the grey bear neutral territory I'm sure you'll want to meet with them."
Calynn nodded, closing the door behind her. Griss turned back to Mila, watching her carefully. "You really are an asshole."
"Griss, that wasn't necessary," Mellonia retorted. Griss stomped out of the room, walking out the front door. Instead of walking towards the stables, she could see Griss head back towards the mountains.
An hour passed in silence. No one returned from the forest. Mila still sat in the lounge, wondering when Heidi and Calynn would return. Lillianna sat beside her silently, watching her curiously but hesitantly. She didn't want Mila's numbness to turn to anger.
"Why didn't I see it before," Mila asked.
"Because you weren't allowing yourself to," Lillianna replied.
"How long have you known?"
"Unfortunately I cannot tell you that. I think I knew about it long before I came to the realization. She admitted it the day we arrived here."
