Chapter 29
Heidi didn't want to leave this place. It was her perfect home. Unfortunately, it was one she could never have, and that left her in a sour mood. Left alone in the large house didn't help either. She felt alone now more than ever, her only friends gone.
She sat outside in the garden beneath a large apple tree. A cat slept in one of the branches, enjoying the small rays of sun in the cool air. Bees buzzed around the open garden, most of them lying dormant on the bee house in the back of the garden but enjoying the weather. Heidi looked around, waiting for something to happen as she sat there. Even in such a beautiful space, she felt lonely. For the first time in ages, she decided to open a book. She opened one of the many mages books in the small library she had.
This one was not full of history like the other ones she had seen. This one was full of spells, specifically plant and earth-based spells. Most dealt with the control of various plants and how to extend or shorten the growth rate. The further she read, the more she learned about elemental magic. The last chapter consisted of a strange element Heidi had never seen before. It discussed elements of light and dark, specifically shadow-wielding and wielding dark matter.
She was interrupted before she could read the last chapter. Roxy's fox shoved his muzzle in the page, looking up at Heidi curiously. He pulled back when she closed the book to look at him, and he grasped it in his mouth, yanking it from her before running back to the house.
Heidi ran after him. As he walked through the cracked door, she followed him into the house and out the front door. He continued into the forest and Heidi followed, now curious to why he brought her outside of the house.
He continued running down a path and towards a clearing. Heidi could hear shouts from Griss and Rae as they dueled. The fox stopped as they neared the edge of the clearing, peaking out to watch the two women duel. Heidi leaned against a tree and watched them.
The two of them threw beams of light at each other. Rae did not use her usual shadow magic, instead throwing light, fire and water at her. Griss wielded the same elements, but with less control. Griss worked up a sweat, dodging everything she could, but Rae just stood there, calculating everything Griss threw at her. She deflected it every time.
Mellonia stopped them, walking to Griss. She placed a hand comfortingly on her shoulder. "Griss, you know how to handle the blade and the shield. They are only so great with magic, but you can use them to your advantage. Most mages are not good with a sword and only carry a short sword. If you can combine your mage ability and your sword combat you can defeat anyone. Why don't you take a break and practice your spells. I would like to see Mila's skills as a swordsman."
"You want me to go against Rae's magic?" Mila looked at her in disbelief.
She blinked no humor behind her words. "Yes I do." She walked back to her observing place as Griss and Mila switch places. Mila unsheathes her knight swords, runes etched into the blade of one of them. Heidi didn't recognize it, a new blade. It was long and thick with weight, but light enough to wield with one hand.
Rae and Mila stood there, watching each other carefully as they waited for the other to strike. Heidi watched, listening carefully to the silence. A sword slipped against a rock, creating the slight clink of metal.
"Alright, go ahead," Mellonia stated simply. Rae glanced at her briefly before raising a hand, palm forward. She created a beam of green wispy light from her hand, releasing it in a ball of energy propelling towards Mila. It bounced off Mila's new sword, light emitting from the blade. It vibrated with energy.
