Chapter 6

Rayon stared at the computer. He could see what happened on the inside of the game. He stared, horrified by these people as they kept them captive and lied about their intention. He pulled on his hair, watching as the men sat around for most of the week, their only activities were eating and praying to their gods. He wanted to help, but he had no control over it and could do nothing to help any of them. All he could do was sit there and watch as they deteriorated in that world as well as this one.

Rayon watched over his sister. Like the others, she hadn't woken from her coma. Rayon knew she was still alive and inside the game, but he wished she would wake. Everyone with an implant had been unconscious for three days already, showing no hope of waking soon. The fact that Rayon could only sit and watch as these people deteriorated and were put on life support was both terrifying and heartbreaking. The beeping of monitors all through the hall drove him insane. A broken one lay in the corner after Rayon smashed it.

Rayon checked every monitor and every fluid that kept all of these people alive more than once a day. Though it was the nurses' jobs, he felt obligated to make sure all of them survived the ordeal. All of this was his fault. If he hadn't made the game, none of this would have happened. Everyone warned him how dangerous it was, but he didn't listen. Now he understood what they meant.

Rayon watched as Heidi, Mila and two other players waited for the other team to come back through the gateway. They watched a girl on the other side, minding her own business. Though Rayon could not hear what was going on, he could see the group talking amongst one another. Something about this girl struck them as odd, he could see it in their expressions. Rayon could see their guild insignia on the jacket the girl wore, but thought it meant nothing, just that they had found another player.

He watched them continue on after the other group returned. Rayon turned from the computer screen, bored from their repetitive searches. He looked at Heidi's lifeless body one more time before exiting the room, walking down the hallway and towards the third floor where his uncle resided. After Brent's sudden death, his uncle became more paranoid and didn't want to speak with anyone. His current wife stayed drunk as always, finding any source of liquor she could get as he threw their possessions around the room. . Her step-son's death didn't seem to bother her, as long as her own children were still alive. Because of their unbalanced conditions, they were currently being monitored and forced to stay away from his father's house.

When he entered the room, everyone was there. His uncle sat hunched over the edge of the bed, his gaze at the floor. A tracking device was strapped around his ankle. Bethany and Bart looked up at Rayon in surprise to see their cousin. As always, his uncle's wife was passed out and snoring loudly on one of the other cots. The sight of her large, porpoise body made him cringe. That unhealthy weight meant someone else's lost meal...especially in their current situation.

"What's that for," Rayon asked, pointing to the tracker. His uncle looked up, his face tired with underlying anger. He took a deep breath, knowing how little of a threat Rayon was to him, and he only wanted to know.

"I broke into the main control room," he stated. "No one would update me about our current situation, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. They said it was mainly for precaution, just to keep me out of areas that are vulnerable. They are going to give me a weekly update now. I own the company and I deserve to know everything that is going on."

Rayon shifted. He always felt uncomfortable around his uncle even though they never had any issues with each other. He raised him for the latter half of his childhood, but he wasn't the best guardian. He was always angry and unpredictable, but he never lashed out at him. At the same time he did deserve to know everything. He took over the entire company in their father's death. Still, no one ever found their father's will, and that meant anyone could own it and they just didn't know. The heir was a mystery.
