Chapter 11

The eggs. All were breaking. Avery panicked, knowing what was inside was potentially the death of him. He waited as the eggs continued to crack, beaks poking out from the holes. The small muzzles were lined with small pointed teeth. The head poked out of one of them, a small bald head. The lizard eyes watched him. The raptor began to struggle frantically, pushing himself out of the egg until he finally emerged completely. Then he rested his small clawed arms beneath him, his body limp and his body heaving with breaths. The next one began his entrance into the new world. All Avery could do was watch, and wait for his possible death, or to make these raptors his own minions. He wanted to choose the latter, so he sat patiently, hoping for it to come true.

Two other raptors hatched in the matter of minutes. Three down, five to go. The large one had yet to move. Avery could hear him tap against the hard shell of the egg and give a small shriek. It was only a matter of time before the first crack would appear and the rest of the raptors would join them. Mila's horse waited patiently roped to a tree nearby. Avery assumed he hadn't even seen the raptors.

Avery whistled a tune, beckoning his falcon to come forth. The falcon landed on his knee, looking at him with straight, dangerous eyes. Avery attached a rolled parchment to his leg before sending him off. The grey falcon squawked, bowing his head before spreading his wings and flying off.

Mila needed to know what he had, before he returned. She wouldn't like him arriving back with something that was supposed to be extinct, let alone one of the biggest predators known to man.

"You are making a big mistake you know...bringing that into the new world. For all you know the both of us will be dead in a matter of minutes. You should kill them now," she said, her feet crunching in the dead leaves as she approached. She was quick and quiet on her feet, but she no longer startled him every time she approached. He was use to the silence being sliced through by the sound of her voice.

"Why are you still following me," Avery turned to her, his brows furrowed into a line. Her expression didn't change, her brows furrowed in annoyance. Avery liked the little blonde girl, but he felt it was too dangerous for her out in the woods. She found him one morning and decided she was going to be his best friend. He thought otherwise. He wasn't about to be responsible for a little girl's death. Beneath her brown cloak a weasel's head peaked out. He gave a squeal, trying to get the girl's attention, but her eyes didn't budge from Avery.

"You need me more than you are giving me credit for," she crossed her arms over her chest. The weasel shifted up into her hood, peering behind her head. She wore her hair short, the back curled against her head. The front was longer, curled up and over to the side like a cowlick. It reminded him of his father, always keeping his hair nice to please his rich friends, but his was always tight and lay flat against his head with gel. The thought disgusted him, especially after they disappeared, accused of major bank fraud and the murder of a businessman.

"You are too young to be out here on your own," Avery stated. Another one of the raptors began to struggle out of his egg. The first hatchling shuffled over to Avery and curled up beneath his leg. He bent his head up and let out a small cry. Avery handed him a small slab of meat from lunch.

"Coming from someone who is also too young to be out in the woods on his own. Surrounded by potential predators that would look at him as a morning breakfast."

"They're babies," Avery stated. "If I can show them who is boss early on then we won't have to worry about that. Besides, I'm older than you are, more experienced with a sword and a bow. I've lived through the entire history of this planet unlike you. I can take care of myself. You, on the other hand, know nothing."
