Blood,sweat,tears,screams...everywhere. It was basically a war zone. We had to fall back, there were too many of them. Mark was still holding the line, almost everyone from our grid were shot dead. The butcher was slashing heads off our men in his way. It was outrageous, blood decorated the rusty walls of the buildings.
"Mark!" I yelled, "We have to fall back! They won't die off!"
I was pulling Mark's shirt as he kept shooting, reloading his gun every few seconds. The burst fire was too loud, I almost went deaf. The bullets from the hunters kept zooming past us, hitting the layers of walls and the asphalt ground.
I heaved Mark into a corner. The hunters were mocking us with their cheer. Explosions went off in the streets, destroying everything in its path.
"Merk!" I said, my Irish accent bursting out. "We have to get outta here!"
Mark glanced at me before shooting as he peeked beside the wall. More kept coming, the hunters were flooding themselves in the area.
"Right, there's no way we can kill every single one of them. We'll have to evacuate. Jack can you run?" He asked me as a bullet went past my head. My eyes widened in fear causing me to duck for cover. Holy shit that was close!
"Yeah of course." I replied, the hunters were getting nearer every second.
"The bunker, get the women and children out. Felix and his team are protecting that grid. Tell him to start the convoys and lift the back gates."
"But Mark! You'll die if you stay out here alone! I'm not going without you!" I refused, he couldn't just be out here by himself. What was he thinking? Mark's no Superman or Thor or anything like that.
The scene was getting worse. I tilted my head up a little and found a huge tank going through the front gate. The fuck? How in the world did they get a fucking tank? Robert was busy suppressing the vehicle with his launcher. Mark was huffing breaths as he looked at me,
"I won't leave yo-" I was cut off by Mark,
"Jack! Listen to me! What did I say about following orders! If you don't tell Felix then we'll all die! They're just women and children Sean, do you want them to waste their lives just to get killed by these crazy people?! They deserve more than that!"
"Why not use the walkie talkie!" I continued, I was being stupid. Time was passing by and the tank was already releasing warheads. Some of the hunters were shot by our snipers but then, they took too long to reload and eventually had gotten killed by wandering bullets.
"The walkie talkie is fucking out of battery Sean! Just go! Please! Don't worry about me, I'll be there before you know it!" Mark said as I nodded. I got on my legs and sprinted towards the back grid, it was pretty far but I got to the bunker in the nick of time. Felix was standing there, his team ready to fire.
"Stop! It's me, Sean!" I said, holding both my hands in the air. I ran over to Felix, his face showed me confusion.
"Mark, he said start the convoys and open up the back gate! We'll leave once the women and children are extracted."
"But the back gates are crowded with those hunters! If we open the gates now, God knows what might come behind it!" Felix yelled. Some of the hunters managed to find the bunker, causing Felix's team to start firing.
I made my way inside, calling out everyone to get inside the convoys. I crawled my way in, shouting out for Lilly's name as I assisted the others in getting out. Marzia came by, holding Lilly by the hand.
"What's happening?" She asked. There was no time for chit-chat.
"We'll talk later. The whole compound is being overrun, we have to leave now! Here," I said, pulling out the handgun from my holster and giving it to Marzia, "whatever you do, protect Lilly and all the kids if you can. Now go!"
Marzia nodded as she brought the kids into the truck. Felix was defending the other side of the bunker. This was a massacre, were we going to survive this invasion?
After the bunker was empty I grabbed a rifle and started shooting alongside Felix's team, dropping every single hunter I saw.
"Sean! Where's Mark?" Felix said in an aggravated tone. The gunfire was muffling his voice, I couldn't hear him clearly.
"Mark's at the front, he'll be here any second now."
We were running low on ammo. The last bullets we had in our magazine were now acting as our lifeline.
"There's Robert!" Felix yelled as I saw Robert running towards us. He was panting hard, almost about to faint. I could see that a bullet went through his arm, red vital fluid was oozing out of the wound.
"Fuck, where's Mark!" I said, Robert was moaning in pain, "Rob!"
"H-He's still there, told me to leave if we could. We have to go now." Robert replied, he was slowly fading away along with his blood loss.
It was at that moment I realized that Mark was in trouble. If I go back, then I would be risking my life, but Mark had so much, and I had feelings for him. I gritted my teeth, taking my decision...
"Go, leave a car for me. Don't even try waiting." I said as Robert and Felix stared at me in astonishment. "Give me that rifle, I'm going to get Mark."
"The gates are open!" One of Felix's men said. This what it, do or die.
I held the rifle as I jogged my way to the front line. My heart was beating fast as sweat beads began to form on my face. Bombs came down from the skies, mortars being the hunter's best weapon. As I looked back the convoys started rolling their wheels, leaving the compound almost instantly.
The hunters came before me, shooting across my direction. I managed to take cover and shoot them back, easy kills just like I expected. The butcher I saw before, was standing right in front of the tank, aiming at Mark. It was definite, I was going to see him die in front of me, but not this time, no...
Not yet.
I grabbed a grenade from the ground and threw it at the crowd of hunters, it exploded right in the middle. The butcher was stunned and the dust that came off gave me time to save Mark.
"Sean! What're you doing! You have to go!" Mark cried out, I could see his face bolstering in fear.
"Not without you. You said you'll be there before I know it and I'm making that happen." I said as I used all my force to lift the debris off Mark. I was putting in power as Mark inched himself out of the rock.
I dropped it back down, giving the gun to Mark as he suppressed fire to the hunters. I placed his arm over my shoulder as we both ran to the car. Mark was covering my back, I was shooting at the front with Mark's handgun. It was like we were in the middle of a movie production, Agent Double O'Seven and a combo from the Walking Dead.
We then arrived at the car as I opened the passenger seat and helped Mark get in. He rolled down the windows, continuing to protect our escape. I got to the back and pulled out a few smoke bombs, screening our location blur.
I jumped into the driver seat, started the engine and drove off as fast as I could. I set the gear at full speed, we were gone.
"Yes! Fuck yeah!" I screamed in excitement, we were clear off the danger.
I looked at Mark, both our Septic eyes were telling each other that we didn't have to worry about getting killed. Mark sighed and held my hand,
"Sean, thanks for saving me back there."
I smiled, "Remember, you saved me too. There's no way I'm leaving you."
