We all progressed towards the city, unsure of what we might find. It was either the same old bags of crackers (which of course, rarely pops out) or the miniscule bottles of expired water. It had been two hours scavenging the bleak buildings in Los Angeles, our shoe soles no longer giving friction between our steps and the dry land. It was time we adapt to the new situation, hunting to be accurate.

"Jack, there's no way we could survive this. The world's basically gone to shit." Mark stated. The setting was getting dire for the four of us.

Ken had lost a lot of weight and his wound had been infected with an unknown disease. We tried finding him the medicine in the local drugstores but all of them were looted empty, possibly by the clans. Knowing that the 'scientists' were still searching for the pandemic cure, a bounty was plunked upon our heads, for a million dollars worth of money, heck, I didn't even think the globe even used currency anymore.

"We have to get to the forest," Ken spoke in a croaky voice. By his words we already knew Ken was not going to make it. "We'll do this together before I die."

Mark approached Ken and glared into his eyes, a sight that Ken couldn't look away. Ken groaned, "What the fuck is it Mark, I can't hold up any longer."

"No, you're going to live, I don't want to lose any more of my men and that includes everyone right here right now!" Mark exclaimed as he peered at both me and Marzia, "Please...you have to stay. Don't go."

Ken rolled his eyes and sighed as he gave Mark a bear hug, his beard was fondling over Mark's hair. Mark let go of the embrace and walked towards me, holding out a map as he pointed to a green area. It was perhaps the forest, the place we were going to start learning on how to hunt. Though I do know that everyone besides myself were professionals, I had gone through the experience when my parents took me out on a duck hunting trip ten years ago. The BB gun was where I started working on my aiming skills, becoming the Septic Lone Wolf I was today.

"But how the fuck are we going to find animals?" I thought. This was the END of the world, wouldn't you expect no life at all? I could barely even find a bird in the sky. Only zekes roamed as animals, wild ones that eat humans I presumed.

"There's an animal refuge beside this forest." Marzia began, sliding her finger across the map, "It's secured under Sector Seven but I could get us through, I have an old friend there and she's let me in a few times before."

Mark all of the suddenly realized that Marzia was the one who always went missing, "So you're the one. You leave the kids behind, and go to Sector Seven?"

Marzia shrugged and leered, "Yeah, I suppose you can say that."

Mark heaved a sigh, turning his gaze over me. I could already tell that he wanted me to make the call.

"Well, we could try, but chances are, they might recognize us. Not Marzia and Ken, I only mean," I paused, stroking my finger against Mark's stubble, "us, the Septic."

Mark broaden his mouth and raised his brows, admitting to the actuality that I said. We both knew we were the last men ever to yield the Septic Blood and we couldn't guarantee that we would be safe there, in sector Seven. The possibility of our survival was thin, would they accept us?

I do know that it was going to be an intrusion, not a welcoming entrance but, luck was standing on the edge of the cliff, we'll have to grab it before it disappears.

"Okay, Marzia I'm trusting you on this."

Marzia and Ken went towards the car as Mark followed up from behind, covering the hindmost part of us with the gun. Another problem was going to be ammunition, we were running out dry. Soon, we would be having to depend on our melee weapons for defense. Mark went into the driver's seat, starting the engine as we sped off. Eeriness was all over the four of us, where were the zekes? Why was it so silent.

Sector seven was around the block so we didn't have to worry about covering a big distance but the silence was something we had to worry about. Anytime, a scene might happen, and I didn't want that.

Suddenly, a patrol car emerged from the road intersection. Mark straightaway turned left and into an alley way. This time, there were zekes. I could hear the groan from within the car, which somehow managed to become louder. Mark laid a finger over his lips as he turned off the engine, gesturing us to keep quiet. He unbolted the car handle and grabbed the bowie knife, putting down the roaming zekes with no difficulty. Mark went back in and then started the engine once again, wiping the dark blood off his hands.

"Merk, you okay?" I questioned at him. He shaped up a smile as he nodded.

"I'm fine Jack, you don't have to worry about me. Big daddy Mark has the muscles to protect you."

Ken and Marzia sneered at the both of us, they were as good as being our audience. I chuckled as Mark leaned onto me for a kiss.

"Aww...I love you baby Ja-"

"Okay, we get it. Can we go now?" Marzia interrupted, "You guys can kiss later, besides, we did see you guys naked so...we'll have enough sexual endorsements for today."

Mark winked at me, "That's what she said."

I find Mark extremely adorable, the way he talks, moves, everything about him was a perfect dime but that'll have to wait because we needed to go pronto. Mark drove out of the alley and sought around the walls of the sector, going to where Marzia was pointing.

"Alright here it is." She said, pulling the brakes to a stop, "wait for a sec."

Marzia descended the car and casually jogged towards a small metal hatch. What was she doing?

She knocked the door with an unrecognizable pattern that we couldn't decode. She waited for a bit until the door flung open, showing me bewildering sight. I covered my hands as I saw who the person was, once the Danish girl who always tried to hook me up for dates that never happened, kisses that didn't come about and hand-holding that only lasted for a few seconds before I repelled myself, telling her the truth about my sexuality and seeing her get a new boyfriend the next morning.

She was Signe Hansen but I used to call her Wiishu.
