Becca POV
There was a lot of noise coming from around the house. There were fires blazing and loud screams echoing. We were scared. The men were out fighting those awful creatures while the women and children were huddled in the library.
I looked around the room. It was huge with high ceilings and corridors of books. It was also a safe room. The windows were shielded in opaque fittings. The doors had special locks as well.
Juliet was a trooper and she tried to keep everyone calm. After the initial shock I was galvanised into action. I was now Luna and I had to play my part. I ensured that the children were with their mothers. There were blankets and a small kitchen off to the side. We ensured that everyone was warm. I gave the women around my age duties. I preferred that the older women and mothers remained with the children to distract them.
Luckily we were in a library. I looked at the shelves filled with ancient books. The information I knew about valcans were limited. My grandparents had spoken of them when we were younger and made up tales about their fireballs. Most parents used folktales about scary creatures to scare disobedient children from venturing alone in the woods alone.
'Now listen, we need to help our men defeat these creatures. I will place us into three groups. Now all teenagers not already working please move to the back of the room. Good.' I stated when the teenagers shuffled to their assigned spot.
'Next who here loves to read, romance, mystery, magazines or any type of book? Everyone who has raised their hands, could you come to stand next to me please.' Women trundled to assemble where I had placed them. I could see some confused faces but they would soon understand.
'Those persons remaining could you arrange the furniture into small groups around the library? Then create two separate spaces in the front.'
'Luna why are we doing this?' an older woman asked and I smiled at her.
'We do not know much about valcans, we have all heard their folktales but they are real and we need to find out how to defeat them. Since we are in a library we can get as much books and find something about them.'
The group murmured as understanding spread through them.
'So, I want the teenagers to go through the shelves and collect any book about valcans, mythical creatures, and folklore or ancient terms. Search every shelf and every space. When you find a book give it to a group who will be spread out in small groups of three around the room.' I looked at my team and smiled. 'If those reading the books find anything bring the book to the front where Elder Juliet and her team who will see how we can use the information.'
I scanned the expectant and worried faces.
'Let's save our pack!'
The women galvanised into action and soon a steady rhythm was flowing as we searched for something to help us. 'Luna, what about this?' a young blonde girl around fifteen spoke to me. I took the book from her hands and read the paragraph. I paused. This information was interesting. I bookmarked the old worn book.
'Thank you. What is your name?' I asked her.
'Deborah, Luna.' She replied shyly.
'How old are you?' I asked again.
'Fourteen.' She responded softly.
'You have done well.' I smiled at her as she continued her work. I took the book to Juliet who was busy ensuring that the children were okay. Some were asleep but most were wide eyed and looked petrified especially each time they saw or heard an explosion or scream.
