There was a knock at the door and we all looked up out of instinct. In walked General Washington with a bouquet of flowers and a teddy bear. I had never seen him look so soft, if even for a moment. Azalea screamed as he made his way to her, handing the stuff to Laila as he hugged her.
"General! I didn't know you were coming. Seems like these two are full of surprises."
Laila and I couldn't help but laugh. We made the call as soon as Laila got to the hospital last night. We know the General is basically Azalea's father and she would love for him to be there.
I greeted the General and gently laid Mateo in his arm. Mateo opened his eyes and he smiled, spreading a smile across General Washington's face, too. I can say this is only like the fourth time I've seen him smile. He stuck his finger at Mateo and his little hand wrapped around it. A tear shed from the General's eye and we were all in shock. I was standing next to Azalea's bed and we were falling in love with this moment. This time I took her phone and took a picture of the two of them. General Washington even looked up and smiled as I took it.
I directed him to stand next to the bed with Azalea and they were both smiling ear to ear. This day is definitely one for the books. No literally.
I got all of our things together and watched as Laila helped Azalea up out of bed. "Oh come on guys, I'm fine. I'm not elderly." She began laughing and so Laila backed off. I handed the bags to Laila and I carried Mateo's car seat as he lay in there fast asleep.
"Time to see the world our little prince."
