Franky's doctors came to talk to Laila and I about her condition. Mateo was lying in my arms, his mouth on my left nipple, fast asleep. The doctor explained that they were able to remove the ruptured kidney successfully and that Franky will be able to live a healthy life with just one kidney. The broken ribs will heal on their own but it will just take several weeks.

"Mrs. Minelli," the doctor took a deep breath before he continued. "We're waiting for Francesca to respond, it's been 48 hours since the surgery, her levels are good but as of right now she's still unconscious. We're feeling positive but you have to accept the possibility of her not pulling through. I'm sorry, but we have done all that we could, it's her turn now." As he finished speaking to me my heart dropped to my stomach as the tears from my eyes landed on Mateo's blanket.

"Thank you, doctor. Is there any way that we can go and see her?" I looked to him with vulnerable, tear-filled eyes and saw the ring on his finger, hoping that he would understand.

"Yes, Azalea, I can do that for you. Let me get a nurse to come in here and take you guys down to her room. Just give me a few minutes." He shared a warming smile before he left the room to go and get the nurse.

Moments later I was in the hall outside Franky's room, the nurse opened the door and she wheeled me in with Laila two steps behind her. The second I saw Franky lying motionless on the bed my eyes poured out tears, leaving me to wonder how I still had tears left. The nurse parked me next to Franky's bed and she told me she'd be back to check on me some time later.
Laila stood quietly behind me as I tried to fathom the situation at hand. Looking at Franky's head I saw that she matched me with the gauzes wrapped around our heads. I slipped my fingers into her hand as I picked it up and kissed it. I rested it against my cheek and couldn't help but shed more tears.

"Franky, baby, I need you. We need you. I need you to fight; our family will not and cannot be the same without you. I know this is going to take a lot for you to make it but I know you're strong enough. The doctors are feeling positive. They said they've done all that they could and I believe them. It's your turn now and I need you to realize how much you have right here, in this room alone. Mateo is here with me, and Laila, too. Your family is in this room baby and we need you to fight to complete us. I love you, baby. And I'll be sitting right by your side until you return to us, no matter how long it takes." I kissed her hand one more time then laid my head against her bed and rested her palm on my cheek. I still can't believe this.
