Merry Christmas!
I wrote a part on descriptions before, but my tips have gotten way better since then, so I'm happy to write a new part. Feel free to compare this one with the other chapter to see if it helped you any more (UPDATE: It's over 2,000 words more).
This is me when I read a good description:
I'm happy, I'm overjoyed, I'm relieved.
This is me when I read a bad description:
I'm angry, I'm disgusted, I'm rather ticked off.
Notice the difference?
Reading a bad description physically pains me and gives me a headache. There's nothing funny about it. It's sad. It's sad because bad descriptions can be avoided.
Along with the cover, the description is the first thing someone notices when finding your book. It's the second thing that draws them in because let's be honest: pretty much everyone judges fanfics by their covers.
You're probably wondering what makes a good description and what people classify as "good". Well, the second one varies depending on the person. Seeing as how I'm a really tough critic when it comes to books, who better than me to be said person?
Let me get this out of the way first and tell you some descriptions you don't want to do:
"Read and find out."
