Chapter 30 - Birthday Wish

It was afterschool and I was walking down the long hallways on my way home after a long stressful day. All I could think about was the way I treated Justin.

I acted like a...well...Justin.

I shook my head and sighed loudly dragging my feet down the hall.

Great way to spend my birthday huh?

Suddenly my phone vibrates in my pocket. I take it out and see that I have a new message.

From: Becky!

Sent: 3:40

Ebony, meet me in Room 218. I've got something important to tell you.

I frown confused that she needs to talk to me now eventhough we saw each other all day. I groan that I have to turn back around and walk up the stairs but ultimately I do because I know that if I don't, Rebecca will never tell me what she wants to tell me.

I slowly stomp up the stairs hauling my bookbag over my shoulder. I walk down the hallway and see room 218 but I see that all the lights are turned off.

'That's strange' I think in my head and near the door. I slowly open it and I can barely see anything or anyone, just the dim light from the closed windows.

"Uh...Rebecca?" I call out and my voice echoes throughout the room. Their is no answer and I begin to think that maybe Rebecca typed in a different room.

After a few seconds the lights suddenly turn on and all my friends jumped up and surprise me. "Surprise!! Happy Birthday Ebony!!" They all yelled in unison and I almost fall backwards.

My heart was beating fast and at first I was mad that they all scared me half to death but then my frown slowly turned into a huge smile.

I looked around and saw Rebecca, Chase, Jenny, and Luther standing around the room holding those party horn things that you blow into and then you sound like an elephant. Yeah those things.

I looked to the side and their was a cake on the table with a huge 16 candle on it and my name was spelled on it with pink whipped cream.

Their were balloons floating around in the air and streamers everywhere on the floor. I looked up at my friends and felt happy tears start to build up in my eyes.
"Ohhhhh you guuuuuyss!!" I squealed in a sappy and high pitched crying voice and ran over to them. They all encircled me giving a super bear hug.

We all giggled, laughed together  hugging for a long long time. When we finally pulled away I wiped my tears with the back of my hand.

They all just smiled at me holding onto each others shoulders. I stared at all of them and realized what great and amazing friends I had.

"Im so lucky to have you guys..." I said to them, my voice cracking a little

I tucked my hair behind my ears and looked over at everything they prepared just for me. The cake, the balloons, the streamers, the surprise. It was all incredibly nice and special.

Then I felt like something was missing.

"Um...is Justin...here with you guys?" I asked softly with hope in my glistening eyes. They all looked at each other with sad faces and then back up at me.

They shook their heads no and I feel my heart ache a little bit. Just a little...

"Oh..." I said softly and with a tiny smile. I bite my lip and looked down at the floor. It started to feel awkward and tense in the room when Rebecca came up to me and relieved everything.

"Hey...who needs him anyway. This is your birthday. Its all about you girl." She said with enthusiasm and squeezed my shoulder. The others agreed shaking their heads with smiles on their faces.
