"Phil?"
"Yes?"
"What do you love?"
I looked over at Dan. His head was resting on his arms as he looked up at the sky. We sat on the roof of my house.
12:16 am.
I thought. Was there a difference between enjoy and love? Surly there was...
Was there a difference between happy and love?
"I love sitting behind the wheel of my dads car and driving it down the street at night. When no ones out and hitting the gas pedal so hard you can hear the horsepower working." I paused to see if Dan had an input. He didn't.
"I love listening to music in the park and blocking everyone else out." I thought again. "I love reading a book. I mean, really reading. Reading and connecting with the characters." Stop. "And yet I love being here listening to the crickets singing, the wind blowing." Pause. "And I love you." I moved over to hold his hand. "Why?"
Dan disregarded my question. "what do you want to do when you grow up?" He squeezed my hand for a second.
"I am grown up."
"When you move out then." He explained.
I listened to the bugs chirp and click. "I've always wanted to lay on my roof at night." I started. Everyone was asleep. Everyone except us. My parents had gone out for the night and God knows when they would be back. "I wanna get high or drunk once."
"Just once?"
"Once." I confirmed. "I want to move into a small house. If that's okay with you." I look over.
"Your checking with me?" He asked. I. Could only see the outline of his face and the whites of his eyes.
"Your moving in with me." I said like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "What's with all these questions?"
He scooted closer and rested his head on my chest. I brushed my fingers through his hair, causing it to curl at the ends. His head rose and fell with my breaths.
"Do you ever miss someone even though your in their presence?" He looked straight out at the sky. I leaned back and rested one of my hands under my head and kept the other in his hair.
"I don't think I understand." I frowned.
"I miss you when your not around and I miss you when you are."
It had been a week since we got back from Japan. School had been the same, we had lunch together but that was one of the few times we saw each other. Again, we walked home every day. We didn't talk much on the way home.
"I feel the same way." I came to realization. Dan flipped around so his chin dug into my chest. He rested his chin on his hands.
"Mmm." His throat vibrated against me.
"Your staying over?" It came out less like a question.
"Yeah." He replied lazily.
"Okay."
"Hey Phil?"
"Yes?"
"Can we do this again?" He sat up and looked down. We weren't very high up.
"Okay."
I could picture Dan grinning but couldn't see anything.
We climbed down from the ladder and headed inside. The house was quiet except for the old grandfather clock ticking in the living room.
I crawled into my bed. Dan kneeled beside me on the ground. He rested his elbows on the bed. "I don't think your parents would be thrilled with us sharing a bed." There was disappointment in his voice but he let out s laugh. I rolled over so my face was inches away from his.
"I can lock the door." I replied before ripping the blankets off me and switching the lock. Dan crawled in bed after me. I turned off the light and laid down next to him. His back pressed against mine and our legs wrapped around each other's. I smiled to myself. Dan could tell.
"Your smiling." He announced.
"I am."
There was silence for a few minutes. Just when I thought Dan had fallen asleep, he broke the quiet.
"I can't sleep."
"Oh."
I felt him roll over and burry his face in my neck. His warm breath carried down my shirt. Before I knew it, my back broke out with shivers. "Sorry." Dan whispered. I gritted my teeth.
"Not helping." I mumbled. Dan gave a chuckle. The sound of the garage door opening made me jump. My parents were home. "My parents..."
Dan didn't back away. "They can't get in." His voice was full of exhaustion.
"Goodnight, Phil."
"Goodnight, Dan."
Thought of this in the shower
