I shifted on my bed and tapped at my laptop screen as dans side of the camera loaded. I heard his voice before I saw him?
"Hello?" He called out. I smiled.
"Hey."
"Sorry the connections not the best here." He explained before I could talk more. Being me, I got an uneasy feeling in my stomach but didn't mention it.
"Can you see me?" I asked.
"It's lagging a lot." He laughed. "I saw you had Crystal over today ."
I reached up and touched my flower crown. "She made me this. I tried telling her not all gay boys wear flower crowns but she-Oh!" My hands flew over my mouth. Dans side was quiet for a bit.
"She knows your gay?" He asked finally. Because I couldn't see his face, I couldn't tell what he was thinking. There was no emotion in his voice. I took my hands away from my mouth and nodded. "What did she say about that?"
"She doesn't care." I said quickly. "And she's straight...if your still wondering."
"Does she know about me?" He disregarded my previous remark. I shook my head.
"She knows who you are but she doesn't really know you completely, if that's what your getting at." I hinted. Then I tugged at my hoodie sleeves in embarrassment. "She knows I have a boyfriend."
"But she doesn't know who?" He sounded urgent. Why did it matter so much to him?
"No." I just kept shaking my head. I couldn't help myself. "Does it matter if she knows?"
Dan sounded annoyed. I boiled over with regret. "A little. I don't want the rumor that I'm bi to spread around the school like a wild fire."
I rolled my eyes but realized he could see me. "So what? It's not a rumor if it's true, is it?"
A door closed in the background on dans end. "My aunt needs me to go shopping with her. I have to go." He mumbled.
"Dan?"
"Mmmm..."
"Are you mad at me?" I bit my lip.
"No." He replied.
"You know I won't be able to sleep if I think your lying." I said.
"I know."
"Are you lying?"
"No."
"Okay." I sighed. "Can you stay a little longer?"
"Sure." He said. I cleared my throat.
"So what have you been up to?" I asked.
"Arizona. That's where I am." There was happiness in his voice again. Like it was the most important thing for him to tell me what he's been doing. He was right. It was. "It's so damn hot here. Not use to it. And there's a different time zone!" He laughed.
He went on talking about his long plane ride. I kept nodding and just listening to him the whole time. Even if I couldn't see him, I could picture his smiling face and waving his arms around in enthusiasm.
Eventually, he broke his thought to say he had to leave.
"Miss you already." I said before he had the chance to hang up.
"I'll be back soon, Phil."
