Christian Ozera had never looked at me with so much hatred before and he had given a lot of mean looks. But in my usual fashion I flashed him back the same menacing look. He was wallowing in self-pity about Lissa being taken from him. "Is being Queen really that important?" He said even though Christian knew the answer and no matter what would support Lissa. But while Christian was mad at me he was ten times madder at my boyfriend Adrian. Well I guess ex-boyfriend now. I felt a pang in my chest as I thought about it. But it was for the greater good, I told myself.

So now sit at a large round table, the room small but cozy. I leaned over to whisper to Adrian. But couldn't speak, His smell had become a drug to me, one I was now being forced to quit. I wanted to scream and yell Fuck the greater good I can do what I want But I knew that I couldn't and so did Lissa. It has been five days since I told her and this was the first time I was seeing her since she fainted. Christian had rushed in shortly after and found us there on the floor. Of course I told him what happened, also the news about us both losing the people we loved. He was red in the face, if this wasn't so devastating I would have taken a picture. But he yelled at me, claiming I was lying and forced me to leave. Adrian had tried to talk with him but ended up with a busted lip.

But here we were sitting around a table with the only sound of the clock ticking away. We were at Adrian's parents' home, they had gone to a resort in Greenland and wouldn't be back for a while. I hated the silence, it made my skin crawl so I said "Okay let's get to the point, what the hell are we going to do?" I stood up, looming over the table as Ozera sprung up across from me "What can we do!" Christian yelled, eyes bright and wild. He was a mess. He had proposed to Lissa, she said yes and then hours later have it ripped away by a dead Queen and a rule book thousands of years old.

"We could try to find another way." I said as I slid back into my seat, Adrian's hand grabbing mine."

"You said there was no other way."  Chrsitan screeched.

"Not one we have found." I mumbled as Lissa sat in silence, staring the tea cup she had in front of her. I glanced to look at my solemn best friend. She was cracked inside but was trying to stay together, for the Moroi and Dhampir, her soon to be subjects. "Adrian and I have talked." Lissa said, her voice meek as she interrupted Christians rant about how it's all my fault since Tatiana hated my guts. But we all quieted down to listen to her.

"We will go through with it, it's what's best for everyone." "Fuck everyone Lissa, think about yourself for once, and think about us!" "If we don't marry the council will eat her alive." Adrian said his voice calm and collected. It chilled me seeing him putting on this mask. I wanted to envelope him in my arms and hold him close like the night in the barn that felt like centuries ago. "I can't believe this! I will find another way.

You all say there isn't, but I will find it. Just give me a bit of time Lissa." "We have no time." Lissa said, her voice raising slightly. She was smart and sly in her own way. She knew how to play the games with the people of the council/court and not being of her magic but because she was Vasilisa Dragomir. Christian looked at her again, hurt in his eyes as he stomped off through the front door and out to the street. We followed him to the door but when it slammed close we all were frozen, not looking at each other.

Should I leave? Would I be more of a problem to everyone if I didn't? Could Lissa and Adrian learn to love each other if I was gone? I didn't have time to think any more when Jill came running in, her face flushed as she gulped breaths. She had been running. "What's wrong Jill?" Lissa said as she and Adrian ran to her half-sisters side.

"I'm okay I'm okay." JIll said as she stood straighter. Jill knew about are meeting, no one else did, because Jill was the only other one who out of us four who knew about the letters and there content. "But Lissa you gotta come quick, it's the council, its Ambrose. He took a copy of the letters to them." Jill was frowning as all our faces dropped. We knew this would happen but so soon? Lissa was a lamb being thrown the hungry wolves. We scrambled to put on coats and leave Adrian's family home.

With each step I took while running to the council meeting I felt the weight on my shoulders getting heavier and heavier. I felt like I was suffocating in water, not being able to move and make choices. I was drowning and couldn't remember how to swim.
