I stared at Harley laying next to me. She was asleep. Harley needed to change, too. I touched her face and she woke up. Her eyes were filled with sleep. I got off the bed and went to the bathroom. Staring at my reflection, I saw someone different. There was the sound of air whistling behind me. I turned around and the little girl from town was standing there.
"How did you get in here?" I looked at the door. I didn't hear it open.
"I need to tell you something. Something you can't tell Harley"
I sat on the floor and looked at the girl straight in the eye. "Tell me."
"I am Amelda Quinn. I do not exist as a human. I am a spirit. I can exist but the path you and Harley are going down are making my spirit light weaker. The weaker I become, the more it becomes harder for me to exist."
I blinked. "Wait. What does that mean?"
"You can't be good. You and Harley weren't created for that. You two were created for evil and mania. Please. Save me. I need you two."
"Will you ever become a human?"
Amelda looked at the door. "I already am."
She vanished into thin air. I stared at the wall. Going through the conversation again, I put together the last part: I already am. Harley! I jumped to my feet and ran out of the bathroom. Harley stared at me as I stood in the doorway staring at her like a complete idiot.
"Mistah J, are you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost."
I shook my head. No, she can't know. At least not yet. She wouldn't believe me anyway. I had to find that lady that was always with Amelda. She could explain things better. Maybe. Or maybe none of this would ever make sense.
I walked to the bed. "I'm going into town tomorrow. I want you to stay at the hideout until I come back."
"But, Mistah J, I don't want to."
"I have business to attend to. You will stay here."
"Alright, Puddin."
Harley crawled over to me and sat in my lap. I wrapped my arms around her and thought of Amelia's words. I already am. Could that mean what I think it means? Could this even be possible? It's what she always wanted. Well, one of the things. How would I know? She talks in her sleep. Harley doesn't know that, and she doesn't know I listen to her. If she did, she'd sleep in a different room. I don't want that so I never told her that she talks in her sleep. I sighed and looked at the door. Amelda stood there looking at me. She pointed to Harley before vanishing.
