Chapter 19

Carl's POV

I ran behind Maggie to the gate. My thoughts kept drifting back to Enid and Jessa. Just hoping they were okay. I guess that's what happens when you become a dad.

Finally, we came to a stop, pushing our way to the front of a large group.

At the gate stood the group that took Enid. That beat her. That nearly killed her.

My hands clenched into fists just thinking about it.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, distinct anger in my voice.

The man that talked to me while I was in my cell chuckled. "You didn't think we were just gonna give up, now did you?"

"Look, my girlfriend just gave birth, can you just give us a break?" I asked exasperatedly.

"Don't worry, kid," the man said. "We're not attacking you right now. We're telling you to be prepared."

And with that, he snapped and everyone followed him out of the community.

Once they were gone, I turned to Maggie. "Great," I said exasperatedly. "What do we do?"

"You know what you're gonna do?" she asked, leaning down a little. "You are gonna go back and protect your girlfriend and you daughter. We'll think of something."

"But Maggie-" I protested.

She cut me off. "You need to think of your family, Carl. They need you just as much as you need them."

I considered protesting more, but ai knew she was right.

Nodding, I turned and ran back to Denise and Tara's house.

Bursting in the door, I immediately froze when I saw Enid asleep on the bed. Jessa was wrapped tightly in her arms.

I sighed, a smile coming on my face as I looked at my family. Maggie was right.
I needed to protect them. Especially Jessa. Being a baby, she obviously can't take care of herself like Enid can.

Slowly walking up to the girls, I gently toon Jessa out of Enid's arms and sat in the chair next to the bed.

Holding my daughter with one arm and using my other hand to hold Enid's, determination seemed to flood through me.

This was my family. And I was gonna do anything and everything to keep them safe.
