Chapter 1: You're Going

“No!” I screamed, opening my mouth wide enough, so she could see my tonsils clearly.

“You’re going and that’s final.” My Ma spoke softly but firmly, her eyes burning into me. “Dr Casey said it would be the best for you. We want you to get better.” She pleaded.

“I don’t care what that stupid doctor says, he’s wrong.” I grimaced stubbornly. “There’s nothing wrong with me. I’m fine.”

“You obviously aren’t Gerard. People who are fine don’t try to kill themselves during English class.” She replied solemnly.

“What can I say? It was a boring lesson.” I explained, with a chuckle.

“It’s not funny Gerard!” My Ma protested. “Suicide is a very serious subject and the fact that you’re joking about the fact you tried to take your own life concludes my argument that you are going.”

“But it’s just a mad house!” I complained. “I’m not fucking mad!”

“Don’t you swear at me Gerard Arthur Way!” her voice had begun to rise.” The NJYPI is not a mad house; it’s a place for young people to get help to get over depression and suicide attempts.”

“Bullshit.” I replied stubbornly, “It’s a mad house for teenagers, and you know it.”

“Whatever you say Gerard. You never listen to me anyway. But it doesn’t matter, because whatever you call it, you’re still going.” She huffed a little and handed me a small suitcase. “Go pack a few things.”

“Whatever.” I shrugged, silently admitting defeat and took the suitcase.

“It’s only for a little while.” My Ma reassured me. “Just until the doctors know you’re in a stable place. We don’t want a repeat of last time.” She shuddered a little.

“Whatever.”

“It’s for Mikey you know.” She pointed up the stairs where he was in his room. “He was really affected by what happened in your English class.” She explained. “Please do this for him.”

“Sure.” I trudged up the stairs unhappily. Tomorrow was going to be fantastic, new place, new people and they’re all mad. Can my life get any worse?
