Chapter 6: Lasagna

Sitting on one of the plastic chairs lining the long, glossy purple, table in the canteen, I picked half-heartedly at my lasagna, whilst listening to Frank moan and chatter aimlessly.

“I mean they don’t even give us a vegetarian option. What happens if not all of us want to have the guilt of the killing small innocent animals every time we eat?” Frank exclaimed in frustration. He had not touched his lasagna, having pushed it in disgust towards the middle of the table. “I refuse to eat this!” He huffed incredulously.

“It’s not even that nice.” I replied honestly, as I saw his scowl deepen.

“I would hope not.” He countered. “That has murdered flesh in it. Culled, cut up, crushed, ground into mince and then straight into this.” He spat.

I took a moment while Frank erupted into another speech on animal cruelty, to scan the length of the table and take in the people. There must have been 100 people at this table alone, 50 young adults crammed on each side of the table. There were three other identical tables, except for their colours, in the canteen. Each of the four tables was a different colour, making the canteen grotesquely bright and clashing. There was a sky blue one, an orange one, a lime green one and the purple one where I sat. The use of such bright colours made the canteen look like a playschool and not a Institute for mad people. I shuddered a little and continued to look around, studying the faces of the ‘purple group’.

I saw that the short hair boy sitting next to me had turned to face me and I gave him a soft smile.

“Hi, I’m Thomas.” He greeted me with a strong handshake. “But people I like call me Tom.”

“Gerard, I have no nickname.” I grin, returning his hand shake. “How long’ya been here then?”

“Coupla’ weeks, still as shit as when I started.” He grimaced. “You’re new here right?”

“That’s me.”

“Good luck.” He grins, licking his fork with a frown and getting up. “I gotta’ go to therapy. It was nice seeing you.”

“You too.” I replied.

“You seem like a cool guy Gerard. What’s ya’ room number?” He asked kindly, pushing his chair out with a irritating scrape of the tiled floor. “So we can hang out?” He adds quickly, after seeing my unsure face.

“46, and you seem pretty awesome too.” I return the compliment.

“I’m room 23. Thanks Gerard I’ll swing by and we can hang out. See ya’.”

“Bye.” I watch him put away is plate before I turn around and begin to study the people on the table again.

I recognised a few of their faces from the meeting earlier but no ones name sprang to mind. I did see a girl I recognised, who I remembered to be called Bethany. She sat a few plastic chairs down from me, eating her lasagna silently as others chatted around her. She wore a dark beanie over her copper hair and her nails were painted maroon, although the paint appeared to be chipping. I also saw the over-enthusiastic boy in the knitted jumped, Joel, who sat opposite but one from me. He caught my glance and waved excitedly again, causing me to look away suddenly to avoid an unwanted conversation.

“What do you think?” I heard Frank’s low voice as I turned back to him.

I mentally slap myself for not paying enough attention to the dark haired boy now staring quizzically at me. I took a wild leap and answered. “I agree.” I mumbled and held my breath for his answer.

He smiled, showing perfect teeth and I let out my breath too quickly. “I’m glad you do.” He smiled again. “Otherwise I don’t think we could have been friends.” He added sincerely.

‘Thank God’ I thought as we got up to put away our plates. If I wanted to last long enough to leave this place, I was going to need a friend.

Someone just like Frank.
