“Do I have to go Ma?” I whined, in a last desperate attempt to save my sanity.
“Yes Gerard,” She sighed, and took her eyes off the road for a second, resting her hands on the leather steering wheel cautiously. “You’re not getting out of this, so stop pestering me.”
“This fucking sucks.” I remarked.
“What have I told you about your foul language Gerard Way.” She scolded me, the frustration seeping through her usually calm voice. “Now get out, we’re here.” She stated and opened the door, stepping out quickly. I hesitantly opened the rusting door on my side and shuffled out. The cool air nipped at my cheeks and stung my nose.
“There it is.” She pointed enthusiastically at a large white marble building. It too looked well kept and posh for my liking. “The New Jersey Young People’s Institute.” She smiled. “Doesn’t it look grand?”
“I guess.” I scuffed my feet nervously.
“That’s the spirit Gerard.” I heard a loud cheery voice echo across the courtyard that we had parked in. “It’s very nice to see you. I’m glad you decided to come.” Then the tall man with the large white lab coat, a greying mop of hair and round-rimmed spectacles appeared from behind a pillar. Doctor Casey.
“I wish I could say the same to you.” I retorted cynically, earning an embarrassed slap on the forearm from my mother.
“Shall we go inside then?” Doctor Casey asked giddily. “We need to show Gerard round, get him checked in and assign him to a room.” He smiled happily, “There’s a lot to do.”
“That sounds good.” My Mother replied, before I could reply with a sarcastic comeback. Doctor Casey nodded and strode off towards a set of white marble stairs leading up to a large oak door. “Come on Gerard, let’s have a look around.” She ushered me to follow her.
“Sure.” I grumbled, and dragged my feet across the pebbled courtyard towards the huge door, which looked like it had been taken from a castle, and not the entrance of a mental home.
The inside of the building, the reception area, was just as intimidating and impressive. Tall pillars lined each wall, large paintings clung to the otherwise, bare wallpaper and chairs lined the edge of where the receptionist’s desk stood.
“Pretty impressive eh?” The overly happy doctor told me. I ignored him “Let’s go see the rest of the place.” He continued, and I fished out my earphones from my pocket and stuck them in. Music blasted my ears, loud and sweet. Let’s get this over with then, I thought anxiously.
