“So Gerard now that we’ve filled out the necessary forms, I think its time to go over the rules.” Doctor Casey stated, a broad smile still plastered on his face.
“Okay,” I muttered, my usual nervous self around people, which had been absent for the past few days, swiftly returned in full force.
“Okay first of all.” He started, clearing his throat to continue, “There are no drugs, alcohol or cigarettes permitted on the site. There will be no foul language or bullying towards other young people here. There will be no swapping rooms with anyone or showering with anyone.” The Doctor stopped coughed awkwardly at this point. “There will be classes that you should attend each day. You can choose from a range of classes. Everyone must do at least 15 hours of lessons per week, from anytime between 6am and 7pm. All extra work and ‘homework’ as such should also be completed.”
“Okay.” I sat stunned.
“The final rule is possibly the most important: Each occupant must see the therapist twice a week, more if needed. This is not optional.” He finished with a sigh of breath and slumped a little in the leather chair where he was sitting in his airy office.
“I thought I might as well tell you some things which will help you, such as the day rotas.” He explained casually. “Would you like to know Gerard?”
“Yes please?” I asked confused by his offer.
“Okay well there are three meals a day. On weekdays, breakfast is served from 6am until 8:30am, lunch from 12pm until 1:30pm and dinner from 6pm until 8pm. On weekends everything is an hour later.” He explained happily. “There are allocated times when you can watch the TV, but I’m sure you won’t need to know the details on that. Also every Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 10am there is an hour and a half sport programme which you have to take part in. There are group therapy sessions run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Every week you have one evening where you are allowed out of the site between 4pm and 9pm, this is if the therapist has agreed you are stable enough. There are field trips to the cinema, bowling and ice skating rinks. We run movie nights and games nights, cooking and art competitions, music performances and there is even a book club.” The doctor looked into my eyes knowingly. “I know you think this is a place for the insane and I’m sure you think it’s horrible but we do try our best to make sure your stay is a peaceful and therapeutic one.”
The room was eerily silent for a few moments as the Doctor gathered his breath. “Any thoughts?” He asked me suddenly.
“Uhhr,” I stuttered timidly, not knowing where to begin.
“Don’t be worried Gerard.” The doctor reassured me with a small grin. “It’s a lot to take in. Now if you’d like to follow me back out here. I’ve had someone take you’re bag to your room, so we’ll go and meet the other young people.” He ushered me out his steps bouncing slightly, as he bounded off down the corridor.
