“So this is the ‘chill out zone’” Doctor Casey explained ecstatically, after he had raced through the rest of the rooms in the huge building. We had a whistle stop tour of the garden, office space, therapy offices and many other rather uninteresting rooms. “Where you can sit and meet the rest of the young people who currently live here.” He gestured towards a large open room, filled with chairs, a TV and lots of shelves lining the walls, filled to brim with books.
“Isn’t it nice Gerard?” My Mum stated with a little giggle that almost made me gag.
“And over in here is the dining room area, and the kitchen through the door.” The doctor continued to blabber at an extraverted rate. Then he practically skipped though a wide archway into another large room. “This is the work room because even though you won’t be in school, you’ll still be doing work.” He remarked with a chuckle.
“Great.” I muttered half-heartedly.
“And finally the bedrooms,” He spoke again, and directly us into a large corridor with seemingly hundreds of doors leading off from it. “We have over 400 young people living full-time here so sometimes there is a bit of room sharing.” I frowned at this and he quickly spoke again: “But we’ve pulled some metaphorical strings and you’ve been given room 46. Look here it is.” He exclaimed as they reached a wooden door about a quarter of the way down the corridor. He opened the door and stepped into the small room.
“It’s cute Gerard.” My Ma commented, smiling at me comfortingly, “But I’m afraid I need to be getting back to work.” She admitted, directing her annoyance more to Doctor Casey.
“Oh how unfortunate. But no worries, we’ve got all of Gerard’s details from our phone conversation yesterday, so if you need to leave it is no problem.” He smiled.
“Oh that’s lucky, I guess I will then.” She gave me a loving hug and I saw her blue eyes glistening brightly, “Be good Gee-bear.” She spoke softly, clutching my chin between her warm hands.
“Ma,” I groaned, “Don’t call me that. You don’t want me to get bullied here too do you?” I asked timidly, my new found confidence, faded completely.
“Sorry Gee, but I’m sad to leave. Have a good time though, and make some nice friends.” She grinned and gave me a sloppy kiss, which I hurriedly wiped away.
“Bye Mom.” I smiled up at her, as she turned to leave.
“Bye Doctor, and goodbye Gerard!” She walked out of the corridor, back through the building to the front entrance, and then she was gone.
Now the fun really begins.
