the sun had just set and the air was cool.
it had been decided that the two would take a break for a few days. maybe a week.
At this point they were in Springfield, Illinois. still as clueless as ever on where they are headed. originally planning on going to Oklahoma, but now not so sure. People say to have your future planned out, but with these two, they know nothing about what they're gonna do within the next hour. Much less a week or a year from now.Anyways, they parked the car in the next Inn they came across. They walked in, nothing in hand but a wallet to pay for their single night here. "Hello welcome to Daisy Suite Inns how may I help you?" A man at the front desk asked as the two girls approached. "We're just staying for a night then leaving. Are any rooms free?" Elaine asked as her friend Kimberly walked to a chair and got on her phone. The man took a minute to look up from the screen in front of him but eventually replied, "Yes, as a matter of fact there is. Room 22. First floor." He handed her two room keys and quickly looked away, back to the computer screen. "..Thanks..." Elaine spoke in a sarcastic manor and walked away to Kimberly. She tossed a key onto Kimberly's lap and proceeded to make her way to the elevator. Apparently there are no rooms on the ground level floor, so the 'first floor' is not really the first floor.
Kimberly got up after a few moments and followed Elaine onto the elevator.
Dead silence. This would usually be the time when Elaine said something to break the quietness but nothing was said.
Elaine stared at the elevator doors until they opened. Kimberly, observed as she noticed her friends behavior has changed since they arrived. "What about that phone call you said you'd tell me about?" Kimberly asked as the doors opened and they both slipped out the doors.
"Something with my parents..." Elaine mumbled while getting the key card ready to unlock the door.
Elaine unlocked the door. "Did one of them die or something?"
She paused in the middle of turning the handle. "My mom....was trying to call me. While she was, she wasn't looking at the road and died in a car accident..." Elaine spoke as she continued opening the door and walking in. "Oh...."
"Good riddance, though, right?" Elaine said, turning around to expose her teary eyes, "She never even wanted me, so why should I care if she died? All she would ever do was hit me...the most she would've done on that call is tell me how pathetic I was to run off like that...."
Kimberly didn't know what to do or say so she just stood there.
"I...uh.."
"Don't say anything....you don't have to comfort me. It's no big deal anyways, besides all the things she's told me was true." Elaine spoke, now on the bed with her head stuffed in a pillow.
"Why wasn't I ever told? About....what went on in your house. You told me it was bad but not.....this bad." Kimberly said, sitting on the opposite bed.
"I didn't want to burden you....."
Kimberly just sighed and looked at her friend who was trying to hide her emotions but clearly failing. Without another word, Kimberly rolled over and fell asleep.
