New York City, New York

"Detective Darcy?"  A voice came from the top of the stairs.  "You need to see this."

Detective Maeve Darcy snapped off her gloves and ran up the stairs.  "Whatta we got?"

"5th vic this month like this and it's only the 15th."  The medical examiner, Melinda Warner answered.  "Same cuts, ligatures and burn marks as the others.  She suffered.  Body temp tells me she was killed between 2 and 4 yesterday morning.  Rigor is set in.  She was killed here."  Doc Warner took off her gloves and wrote things down on the clipboard that one of the techs handed her.

Maeve checked her phone's calendar.  "He's doing this on a cycle.  Every 3 days.  Fuck!"

"Maeve... we'll get him."  Nick Amaro said coming into the bedroom.  "There's a bunch of prints, and DNA samples... CSU said it's going to take a while to catalogue them all.  There was one hell of a party here.  Beer bottles, kegs... a variety pills that can't all be IDed... It's more evidence than any of the other scenes."

"Doesn't help these women, Nick... how many more have to die because of this bastard?!"  Maeve was furious.  At almost 27, she was the youngest member of Manhattan's Special Victim's unit.  She had become a Detective at 25.  One of the youngest in NYPD's history.  She had spent a year and a half in Vice before getting a promotion to SVU.  Now she was trying to prove her worth to Captain Cragen and Detective Olivia Benson.

Nick put his hands on her shoulders.  "Maeve, go take a breather.  We'll finish up here."

"I'll be fine."  Maeve pushed a strand of hair behind her ear.  "I don't want Benson or Cragen to think I'm not cut out for this."

"Hey, you're rocking this job.  Stop beating yourself up."  Rollins said.  She had been collecting evidence from the bed.

"You guys have no clue what I have to do to keep my shield."  Maeve shook her head.  "I'm gonna go clear my head."  She headed back down the stairs.

She was not happy.  She'd been fighting tooth to nail since she was 18 to prove she was destined to be a cop.  She hopped in her vehicle and headed back to the 16th Precinct.  She cranked the radio and let the music drown out her emotions.
