Mae was still reeling from the birthday/house warming party that she'd had the night before. She gingerly touched her lips. She knew she hadn't dreamt the kiss that Antonio had given her after she had gotten him up to a spare room because he'd had too much to drink. She sighed. Her new life was about to start now. She looked over at the clock on the nightstand. It was 7am Monday morning. She had a week to get ready for her new life in Chicago as a Detective for District 21's Intelligence Unit. Many of her new coworkers had come over the night before to celebrate her 27th birthday. She sighed and forced herself to get out of bed. She hadn't planned on starting her life over at 27.

She thought back to high school. She thought by 27, she'd be a Detective alright, but she'd also be a wife and mother. That last part was shot, and there was no relationship in sight for her. Or was there? She had no clue how to read her new partner. She then realized that she had no clue if Antonio was even still here. She grabbed her robe from behind the door and went to go check. The guest room door was still closed. Not wanting to wake him, she gently opened the door. She smiled to see that he was still in bed. Well, half on the bed. She closed the door.

"Whatcha ya doing?" Gaby's voice caused Mae to jump.

"Jesus Christ!"

"Sorry... who'd you hide in our guest room last night?" Gaby asked as the two headed to the kitchen.

"Your brother." Mae answered. "He was really in no shape to walk home like he planned to."

"Did he get into the Brugal?"

Mae nodded. "I'm pretty sure between him and that firefighter, Cruz... they drank a least one bottle between them, if not more."

"Seems to be a pattern with him."

"He's an alcoholic?" Mae didn't need that in a partner. She'd seen it enough in her own family.

"No... but..." Gaby opened the fridge. "Since the divorce, he's got a hard time celebrating something. It's like he thinks he's not allowed to be happy." She pulled out some eggs, cream, bacon, peppers and bread. "Has he talked to you about it?"

"When we came down for the Riverwalk case. He mentioned that Laura..."

Gaby nodded.

"She didn't want kids... and that she couldn't take being a cop's wife anymore."

"That just about sums it up."

They made mundane chitchat while making omelettes and bacon. Mae must have let her mind wander because Gaby began waving her hand in front of her eyes.

"Where'd you go?" Gaby asked as she buttered some toast.

"Antonio kissed me."

Gaby dropped the knife, sending it clattering across the island. "He did what?!"
