Chapter 6
Isabella
I wrap my jacket around me tighter and I speed up my pace as I walk to the book store. Fall is barreling in slowly but surely in the month of November. It's normally cold in Detroit, except for June and July, but in these months, it's beyond cold. It's like it's winter already.
I just got done dropping off Carson at school and now I'm going to work. Just the average day for me.
I walk to the front door and unlock it. I flip the close sign to open once I'm inside and let out a sigh. I grab the cart from the back and I start stocking the shelves.
An hour into stocking, I hear the bell from the door and I roll my eyes.
I'm not in the mood for customers.
I keep my attention on the books that I'm placing on the shelves. If that person needs help, they can find me.
As I pick up one of the books off of the cart, two of the fall off of the cart. I let out a groan of irritation.
I bend down to reach for the books until someone else get's them for me. They hand them to me as I keep my gaze on the floor.
"Thanks." I mutter out.
"Having a rough day?"
Shit.
I haven't spoken to anyone in the Moretti family in a month and I wasn't planning on speaking to any of them anytime soon. Gabi tried to reach out, but I guess she took the hint and she stopped contacting me.
I bring my gaze up and see Lucca smirking at me, but I just glare at him. I'm sure the twins or Gabi told him that I was done with the Moretti's.
"What do you want?" I spit out.
He continues to smirk at me. "Why the hostility? I come here in peace bellissima." he holds his hands up in a mock surrender. "I just want to talk. That's all."
"Well if you haven't gotten the memo, I don't walk to talk to you." I state. I walk right past him and roll the cart to the back of the store.
I make my way to the front desk, but of course, Lucca steps in my way.
"I think you should let me explain on behalf of my siblings."
I glare at him. "Well your siblings need to be the ones that's doing the explaining, not you." I side step him and walk to the front desk and take my seat behind the counter.
But of course, he pulls up a chair from one of the tables and sits right beside me. Doesn't he know he's not suppose to be back here?
"My siblings said they tried to explain, but you kicked them out before they had the chance."
I hang my head in shame. I could've given them a chance, but how do they expect me to act when they confirm everything is true that the news is saying?
"And just to let you know, Gabi doesn't get herself involved with our... activities."
"I figured that out already but by association, I don't want to be involved with any of this."
Lucca sighs out of irritation. "You can't judge us like this bellissima. We're actual real people. The twins are the same stupid boys you met and Gabi is the same loving person you met and made your friend, so what has changed?"
"You guys kill people." I state.
"For a reason." He says bluntly. "Everyone isn't a goody good like you Isabella. They're some people in this world that just need to be... hanlded so to speak."
